COVENTRY City captain Sammy Clingan has turned down the club's offer of a new contract - and will be leaving the Sky Blues in the summer on a free.
It is understood that Clingan turned down the contract City offered him earlier in the season – which former chairman Ken Dulieu revealed at the time was worth £8,000 a week to the midfielder.
The news mean that the Northern Ireland international will be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer when his contract at the Ricoh Arena.

Thorn confirmed: “I have spoken to Sammy. We have offered him a decent contract but he chose to turn it down, but that’s his prerogative.
"He’s been great but it’s highly unlikely that we’d have got anywhere near what he was asking for.
“We offered him a decent deal and he chose to wait until the end of the season and see what he can do so we wish him all the best.”
Clingan signed for the Sky Blues in the summer of 2009 for £650,000 after Norwich dropped into League One in what turned out to be a bad decision after the Canaries secured back-to-back promotions and are currently plying their trade in the top flight.
Elsewhere, striker Clive Platt is also due to have talks with the club about staying on next season.
However first team flop Freddy Eastwood is free to leave after four years, 113 league appearances and 17 goals since his £1.2million, £10,000-a-week move from Wolves.
And third choice goalkeeper Danny Ireland looks set for a return to Australia when his contract expires this summer after the 23-year-old has been set-back by illness and injury over the last 12 months.

There will be quite a few gone before the start of the season, looks like the same as last year. Less players, no new players and same manager.

Never have I been so happy to see three players out of the door. I am one of the few that rates Eastwood, but I know we can't carry someone that costs us £122,000 per goal.

He’s been a massive disappointment when we really needed him to step up and earn his high wage. I won’t miss him.

Terrible captain. His heart has never been anywhere near it. We dont need that at the club. However we do need the approximate £18k a week wages that those 3 leaving will free up, excellent.

Good, we need to look to the future not be held back by players who have failed us in the past. I am a big Clingan fan as well.

Ireland was always beset by injury and illness-so the jury's out there. Clingan, as club captain, has been very poor indeed this season in terms of attitude and quality on the pitch-his suicidal backpass at Brighton stands in the memory. The likes of Deegan will thrive in the third tier and I'd sooner have him in the middle than half-arsed Sammy.

no surprise ..... cant afford Clingan or Eastwood. Clingan had his good moments but generally "not at it" this season .......... Eastwood has been a complete waste of money at a time we could ill afford it (i have no sympathy for him at all).

Wish Ireland a bit better fortune with his career, it hasnt taken off because of injury and illness and thats a shame because he was rated

Not upset to see Clingan or Eastwood go to be honest. It's not like losing Westwood, Gunnar and King is it?

"Oh Sami Clingan, it coud have been you"

Not surprised and not particularly bothered. The times when we were worried if he was injured and out of the team are a distant memory. The odd flash this season, but he's been a poor captain.

Onwards and upwards.

Liked Clingan at first, but has disappointed of late. Didn't think he'd stay. Ah well, more money saved for SISU......

If Clingan was offered £8000 a week, is that what others, like Bell and Baker, may have been offered?

It has been posted on here before that Baker is on £8000 a week.

Didn't he then swap shirts and wear his Norwich shirt as he came over to clap us? I remember that at the end of the game.

He's been gone since the start of the season in my eyes. Even if we had stayed up he'd have walked away. And his performances this season show that imo.

I'll await the same news to be broken tomorrow about Cranie turning down our terms and opting to go elsewhere. He however, will be missed.

Clingan is a serial transferee, and we have a few of them.

Having said that, I would have preferred to keep Clignan for £8000 a week rather than Baker and Bell.

Eastwood might of been alright next year in league 1. I guess we have to hope McDonald comes good.

Clingan is the type of player we need... But he's not been good enough.

With Ireland going too that's about £20k a week freed up. £1m a year. Anyone else on more than about £5k a week probably isn't safe, apart from maybe Keough.

If we get the rent reduced we will be looking a lot healthier finances wise at least.

Hahaha. Having two back ups that are a bit shit is better than having a captain that is plain awful.

People are forever saying that Bell and Baker are on 8K. How do they know this? I bet they're not even on half of that.

First season with us he was excellent really made us tick. Then got injured, never the same, been really poor the last couple of seasons, never sure why he was made captain.

Didn't your mate LBB get that from John williams?

Also, don't you think that Clingan would be on similar as Bell & Baker as perceived senior pros in the squad?

Just what Forest and Norwich fans say.

Didn't a Norwich fan post on the CET forum that Clingan would take us down when we signed him???

I hope Bell and Baker are on that much, and i doubt they are. But chances are It probably is between 5-6k which is double what the pair of them should be on put together.

If Bell & Baker are on 8k then the people who offered these deals want shooting, I would be surpised if they are on over 3k a week, and even that for me is about 6 times what they should be on. As said many times (no body ever seems to listen) this club has no future while it employs the likes of Baker, Deegan and Bell.

What's wrong with Deegan? I think he is the type of gritty man we need in league 1. Not technically good, but he'll let you know you need to watch your back.
