I'm writing an article about Cobi Jones (it's a kind of Where Are They Now? thing) and I want to get fans' memories about him as a player. Any memories/stories you have - good or bad - please post them here. Doesn't even have to be a story/memory as such, could just be your general view on his short time at Cov.

I'd want to use some of the your quotes for the article, which will appear on the Yahoo Football website next week. So if you don't want your comments to be used then let me know, and they won't be. All quotes used will be credited to Sky Blues Talk.

Some of you may recall I wrote something similar about Magnus Hedman last season: https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/blast-past-no-10-magnus-094054894.html

Cheers,
Kevin

The club shop sold a Cobi Jones tshirt on a wave of great expectation upon his arrival. Rumour has it, even Leigh Jenkinson and Julian Darby were a bit miffed they never did one for them.

Decent player I thought but Phil Neal constantly played him out of position.
Seen him out at the Hollyhead once and these Cov lads were giving him loads of shit, but he had 2 minders with him so no dramas.

I was once stuck behind him in the queue at the McDonald's in the city centre. He was wearing a big brown wax jacket so until he turned to leave I didn't realise it was Cobi Jones in front of me rather than a homeless man

Won a penno against Leeds on his debut after a 40 yard mazy run iirc. Thought he was going to be amazing, but truth was he wasn't Alexi Lalas, and that's who we all wanted at the time. Still remember the back page of a newspaper (The Express, maybe) that claimed we'd offered to let Lalas' band hold a concert at HRoad if he signed. Honestly, still a bit gutted he didn't. Anyway, Cobi Jones: Haircut 7 / 10, ability 5 / 10.

Seemed to be playing without studs on his boots, always slipping over just when needed not to! Saying that I saw him have a blinding game at Chelsea.

Never saw him play for Coventry (he only played one season) but saw him play for the US national team countless times. I believe he still holds the record for number of US caps. He went into management for a time and is now an occasional TV pundit in the USA. As a player he was a vital cog in the USA team for many years and scored quite a few excellent goals. He was noted for a very powerful shot. He played in three World Cups.

Fast and like most wide players was hot and cold. Good song though:

Cobi, Cobi Cobi, Cobi Cobi, Cobi Jones-ee ....

We should repeat for Jodi if we don't already :)

I was having a pint in I think it was Drummonds in Kenilworth when I spotted CJ and Weggerle. I headed over for a chat. It seemed to be going well, although I recall I may have been doing most of the talking, when I was momentarily distracted and looked away for a second. When I looked back they were gone leaving nearly full pints. I think it was just after our chat that Weggerle went AWOL.

Did Weggerle go AWoL or am i remembering that wrong or did i just dream it?
Didn't turn up for training, maybe a game as well, something like that.

I remember him getting a wicked head injury, I think that it might have been Chelsea away, but he had a good game up til that point.
Sure that he reappeared with his head bandaged - which looked very comical, but fair play he played on.
Always thought that he was an honest player, if not one our better signings made around that time.
Didn't it come out after that Bryan (wheres the money gone?) Richardson signed him because he thought that he would be "Good Box Office" on the back of the World Cup?

Wegerle went AWOL a lot -especially at 3pm on a Saturday.

He was one of those signings that we're going to be legendary or shocking..... Sadly the latter won on this occasion. Even with this I always liked him! Maybe the hair!

Did he do an overhead kick for a cross to Dublin who scored. Think it might have been his debut v Leeds, probably wrong though. But he was fast as fook

The best comment was a radio phone in with Atkinson. A woman came on and gave him a going over. At one point the ever politically correct Atkinson said to her to go and put the kettle on.

She carried on though and asked him why he wasn't playing Cobi. The answer "he's not good enough that's why".

He probably realised he had overstepped and then said he had a bit of an injury - but he was right.

He wasn't good enough.

I remember travelling to Oldham for a midweek game and in the 1st 30 minutes got sent off for swearing at the ref...other than that I don't have much memories for him

<snip>

He wasn't good enough.

But he was good enough to play 164 games for the US national team (more than any other player) and play in three World Cups.
He played over 300 games for Los Angles Galaxy scoring 70 goals.

The most telling contribution I remember him making for the Sky Blues was a winning goal which helped to keep us up one year - possibly away to Wimbledon? I was screaming my head off with relief in Sainsbury's car park, as you do.
