Corners and free kicks (1 Viewer)

When was the last time we scored direct from a free kick? I now seem able to predict with alarming regularity who will take the kick and whether it will hit the wall or go over the bar.

How many corners have we had this season and how many goals have we scored from them? We seem to get more than our opponents or perhaps I just notice them more, but despite everyone getting excited about a corner we rarely seem to produce any end product from them.

I know we have some stattos out there so if you can help I'd be grateful please.

Finally, when did we last come from behind to win a game? I know someone posted a while back that it was some time ago, but who was it against and when please?

Thx in advance

I don't think we have scored from a free kick all season. I think Clingan scored a deflected one somewhere last season?

I think Blackpool at home was the last time we came from behind to win 3 -1 but I am not sure as that was 3/4 seasons ago?!

The last time i can actually remember us coming from behind to win was our 2-1 home win against Preston. It was on Sky and a screamer from Michael Doyle 25 yards out won us the game. Great match

Good point there Rob - always baffled me on this one:

Just to answer your Corner Kick and Freekick question I have simply analysed the last 10 games

This has showed we have taken a total of 64 Corners and 81 Freekicks with no frigging goals !!!

(That's 14+ dead ball attempts per game)

Extrapolate that across a 46 game season and we have 294 Corners and 372 Freekicks (660+ deadball attempts) still with no frigging goals !!!

Something is seriously wrong here don't you think ???

Our corners are shocking, usually overhit or short. If they are short we try to play keep ball back to midfield rather than filling the box.

Not to optimistic. The other night we had 4 players not including the taker outside the box!

The last player who I felt confident was going to get on the end of corners regularly was Dann. But Dick would isn't bad.

So with corners do we think its lack of height, lack of presence, delivery, tactics or a combination of tehse and other reasons?

It has to be peculiar to CCFC because how many times have the opposition scored late in the game usually from corners or free kicks whilst we, faced with the same scenario, score NOWT

Remember the good old days on corners with Gary McAllister swinging them in and Dion either scoring direct or flicking on for others to score

Oh yes! Probably my favourite time being a City fan even over the FA Cup triumph. I was a few years older and it was for a more sustained period. I actually believed in that team like I've believed in no other.

I think our corners have been woeful in general. Usually overhit to the far post with lots of height. There appears to be no great variation. McSheffery takes most and I would rather see Baker do it because he tries to mix them up. I would say we dont attack the ball but then again it has usually flown way over everyones head ! Its strange but Platt wins the ball up front but at corners rarely gets near.

Free kicks - then I would let Norwood pull the strings. He seems more alert has a decent shot on him and mixes up the delivery. The other night he played one inside the fullback for McSheffery to run on to that really caught Palace on the back foot

The corners were typically useless against Palace. Every last one. Floated in to no one in particular. We would have been better off if the referee forbade us from having any more and gave a goal kick to them everytime. Also, I don't remember McAlister's corners being worldies... floated in to the near post, no variety (until his final season with us when they started to look a bit more dangerous). I think the only difference was that he was dinking them in to talented headers of the ball like Dion who would attack it or sweep up the rebounds with telescopic limbs.

Ward and Turner were pretty effective so I guess we are missing a powerful centre half's presence in the box.

Has anyone noticed that recently we've started outswinging corners.
McSheffrey taking corners on the left and Baker/ Bell from the right for me doesn't work. Against Palace it was so predictable. I can appreciate that Platt is a great target man but surely if he is being marked by two players it makes sense to aim the corner towards someone who is less under pressure and should get a chance to score.
Thorn's tactical naivity astounds me at times. I don't understand how most of us can see it and he completely fails to.
I am always asking myself which other team plays the diamond formation? (although credit as he has converted to the more traditional flat midfield), now I'm asking do any other teams play outswinging corners?

We haven't come from behind to win in about 48 months and our corners and free kicks are shocking especially the so called set piece specialist Clingan his deliveries areshite always to deep

Yep, did notice this. Used to be left footers taking the corners from the right and right footers from the left. Now it's been reversed. That just means every corner kick is an outswinger.

I may be guessing this but Derby home this yea we scored from a corner baker volley, previous to that was it crainey v sheff utd at home,I think clingan scored a direct free kick v preston two year ago other than that I'm struggling these off the top of my head by the way

I'm pretty sure that was a platt flick on from a Christie long throw.

Exactly, they're so impotent. At least with an inswinger it goals towards goal where anyone can get a touch to go in.

We have one threat on the pitch and its Alex Nimely. Single handedly keeping us in the league whilst the rest look like they're trying to Fuck it up.

Last free kick was against Scunthorpe by Sammy Clingan during Colemans last season.
As for corners I think Deegans goal vs Bristol and Blackpool both came from the ball dropping to him just at the edge of the area, Juke definitely scored from a corner vs Southampton and I think Nimelys goal may have been from a corner vs Ipswich.

The thing I dislike about our corners at the moment is they are floated rather than whipped.
