Well either we are performing actions or we are not - all I see on here is we need to do more. What more do you think we need to do?
Germany? Sorry it’s absurd to say a country has over 20% of all deaths and that’s not an anomaly
Im not talking about us. You said the only possible reason for Italy’s high numbers were lies or a bad healthcare system, I just pointed out that the most common explanation is that they didn’t take it seriously enough soon enough.
If you really want to know what I’d do here, I think I’d be encouraging more social distancing at this point. Work from home where people can, try not to travel or attend social events if you don’t have to. Encourage event organisers to cancel where possible. We seem reluctant to say it’s serious enough to change much and that seems to be creating a mix of panic and lack of concern that can’t be good. I’d basically be doing what ever other western non US nation is doing.
I think this virus has been about long before the Chinese released a statement! It’s great news IF that’s the reality. Who knows. The key is whether the virus ‘reappears’ (not sure I’m of the medical term !!) and becomes widespread once the restrictions are removed though
Bet the Amsterdam brothels are struggling then?Absolutely. Surely, there's more chance of infection in closed spaces such as pubs, theatres and cinemas?

Just watching the Wolves match - very dull like a training game - so dull in fact I have turned over to Rangers
But here’s the tricky bit though shmmeee, if you do believe that (which I can’t argue against as everything you say/other countries have done is intuitive and some of the stuff the government/chief medical officer is counter intuitive) are you going to avoid Saturday and other social gatherings ?
From what I heard at the press conference the government, rightly or wrong, is delaying these steps until around the peak as this is when they will be most effective in stopping the spread and they think the steps will be required for several weeks (minimum). They also believe that certain things such as screening at airports and stopping outdoor social gatherings are catchy/big statements but have very little effect. Also the travel bans for those from countries with similar infections rates as ourselves (like trumps done) again appears pretty worthless at this stage
ps The one thing I would be suggesting now is that elderly/people with respiratory illnesses minimise attendance at places with larger crowds (from supermarkets to events) to reduce the risk to them. I don’t really understand why this hasn’t happened (unless I have missed it - presume many have done this anyway)
Well I’m now self isolating until Tuesday so yes personally I am. And I’m going to reduce the contact I have with others generally and will be seeing how much I can work from home. I’m not saying the government has to go storming in now, but there are a lot of experts looking very worried about this strategy. Maybe we should be going for bigger actions and as a layman I just haven’t wrapped my head around the severity. Italy’s healthcare system is a breaking point with a higher beds per capita figure than us and by all accounts is a good month or more from the peak. Moreover there seems to be a feeling of panic creeping in that we aren’t doing enough and some simple advice that falls short of legislation or government action but goes beyond “wash your hands” could help there.
Didn’t realise you were self isolating. Hope alls ok
No him noDoctor Who?
I think it’s what’s to be expected from a government elected solely on populistI think the government have handled this appallingly and we are woefully under prepared.
We've had the 'benefit' of seeing it take hold in other countries and we have done absolutely nothing while other countries have put numerous measures in place.

Ideals and sound bites, when it comes down to it they’re an empty cabinet.
How bad does everyone think it will be in week 10-14??

The NHS is facing massive challenges. The issues are capacity ... over the past 10 years the number of beds has been cut. The virus hits respiratory functions and there is limited numbers of respirators.... and trying to secure more is difficult with lots of countries looking to buy more. The hassle here is we are short of doctors and nurses to run them . Bottom line is the medics will be faced with dilemmas of who to give the limited number of respirators to. Our chancellor has promised unlimited funds, but it’s too late to make a big difference in the next 10 weeks. Everyone do everything you can to avoid infection
Typical city if we win the league behind closed doors!
He said it was desirable to build up immunity for the future which is correctI can't quote his exact words, but at today's press conference the science "expert" LOL, made a statement similar to - We don't want to slow the infection rate too much because we want to build up immunity. Says it all.
Yep, 10 years of under funding has led us to this point and now it looks like that could be a disastrous mistake.
In Italy they are basically having to choose who lives and who dies when allocating beds and equipment in this pandemic. I hope we don't find ourselves in the same situation but it is a possibility.
A friend of mine in my neck of the woods who is a medical doctor was asked today if he was concerned about the Coronavirus Pandemic? He is due to be on a local radio show tomorrow and shared what what he will say:
My simple answer is ,
"Yep, Things are really ramping up in hospitals and primary care in terms of testing and new diagnoses. What will make the biggest difference now is how our communities work together rather than focusing on what we as individuals want and can do.
It will be the individual acts of compromise and sacrifice over the next few months which will be how our communities reduce the number of deaths from a severe respiratory illness.
We are going to discover what our society is capable of
- the very best or the very worst .
Stay healthy , wash your hands , keep your loved ones close and give them a hug ,
Dr Nik
Makes sense to me. What do others here think?
