Except that other senior virologists in Europe and elsewhere seem to disagree with how that approach is being managed. The UK, or more technically England and Wales is pretty much the only place in Europe that isn’t taking more stringent measures to try to slow the spread.

Even previous government health specialists have come out against the current relaxed approach, what’s your level of expertise to discount all of their theories?

I hope it’s better than your statement that you can’t slow the spread down because that’s patently not supported by the evidence.

Nobody is slating the credentials of the couple of experts that we seem to be relying 100% on, but a whole lot more equally as well qualified people- across the world as well as in the UK- do not agree with them.

I assume he is the health "specilaist"

No, I may be wrong but I am assuming he means this guy Health expert brands UK's coronavirus response 'pathetic'

The peak is flattened by not taking action - that is the point so through natural infection it manages the capacity unlike in Italy when they rapidly became overloaded

Sorry, I think you’ve misunderstood the proposed plan. The peak is flattened by taking action they just want to delay action until its most effective so the peak is flattened and we don’t suffer a second peak of a resurgence after counter measures are lifted. They want a proportion to get infect and recover to help with this ~60%. They think the extreme action of China will result in a second peak as people go back to work. No other nation is taking this strategy.

Do the official stats even mean anything now? Seeing as over 10 thousand people are expected to be infected how is saying say 700 confirmed going to mean anything? Will it show how fast its rising?

The other point as well is the geological spread of the virus in the uk is fairly isolated and not concentrated which again shows our strategy has to be different to those with a concentration of infections

I don't think you mean geological, unless worms are now classed as highly vulnerable

Couldn't say, but it does appear that the confirmed cases does not tell the full picture here or anywhere else. Given that many countries have declared that they are not going to test people who get ill and self-isolate back to health, I'm not sure how valuable these figure are. The number of deaths - which will be recorded and pretty accurate in most places, will probably be a better guide of how badly hit a particular country is, but even that will be skewed by local factors and access to treatment etc.

Clearly geographical it’s not concentrated and again this was cited this morning as to why we are nowhere near a peak and containment now will strain services later

From a few dys ago:

"A leading London doctor today criticised the pace and scale of the UK’s response to coronavirus, saying the Government must “wake up” and heed the advice of frontline staff.

Dr Simon Ashworth, clinical director for critical care at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said schools and universities should be closed, non-emergency operations cancelled and large public events axed."

But I'm sure Grendel knows better than him.

He's not an epidemiologist though. It is not his speciality. He would also be singing a different tune when his nurses etc are off looking after there kids

No I think people like Whittey and Smith do as their arguments are plausible - why would you close schools out of interest?

The geographical (geological) point is correct though. As 80 plus percent of all cases in Italy are in 1 area that is why it has overwhelmed the Italian hospitals.
