HOPES of a financial lifeline for the relegated Sky Blues through lower rent payments for the council-owned Ricoh Arena appear in tatters today.

Coventry City Council leader Coun John Mutton, speaking to the Telegraph, poured cold water on Sky Blues’ chief executive Tim Fisher’s hopes for a renegotiation of rent to management company Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) – which is jointly owned by the council and Alan Higgs Charity, and has a long lease on the council-owned stadium site.

The council’s leader also indicated any hope of the deficit-ridden Sky Blues buying a stake in the stadium and its profit-making commercial activities remained extremely unlikely.

Mr Fisher – speaking on Saturday evening after Coventry City Football Club suffered a further multi-million pound financial blow by being relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in 48 years – confirmed the club had not paid its £100,000 rent this month.

In outlining a draft financial plan to “bounce back” to the Championship to be put to the club’s owners, London-based private equity firm Sisu, Mr Fisher added: “As part of our planning and of understanding what our finances are, the rent is not currently affordable. That’s a fact.

“However, the discussions we’ve had with ACL, the council and Higgs Charity have been constructive. I’m hoping there will be some flexibility there.”

But Labour council leader Mutton, a Sky Blues fan of 57 years, renewed his public attack on unpopular owners Sisu, and said the council would expect the full rent to be paid.

He said: “There have been talks, not negotiations, which are nothing to do with the council. It’s been an ACL thing. I was with the chairman of ACL David Allvey on Saturday. I’m advised that while work is still ongoing to enable ACL to make more profit which may be able to benefit the football club, there has been no discussion about decreasing rent.

“There is a legally binding contract and that would be expected to be paid.

“If for certain reasons there is future negotiation, that would be a decision for the full council to take as a shareholder as to whether we would be prepared to accept that.

At the moment, there seems to be more threats than negotiation – the threat to put the club into liquidation. It really is time for Sisu to realise Coventry doesn’t bow at the knee to threats.

Asked about any prospect for future negotiations about the football club buying into the stadium, he said: “It’s public money that went into building the Ricoh Arena, and public money for us to remain a 50per cent shareholder.

“It’s not for the public purse to subsidise organisations like SISU."

Page 2 of that article suggests that the 50% share of the Arena will NEVER be for sale, and that the Council Leader was singing "SISU OUT!" with the rest of the fans.

I have been generally supportive of the Council stance on this as put forward by Mr Mutton but I have to say that these comments border on the unhelpful. Seems to be threats on both sides Mr Mutton

Personally I think that anyone with a bit more business savvy might have said something like "yes there have been talks and we recognise the difficulties faced by CCFC. But this is a matter between ACL and CCFC and we are being kept fully informed. We have a duty to the ratepayers of Coventry as a whole to ensure that the Ricoh Arena operates profitably and CCFC is only one of the tenants "

But then again I dont have one eye on the local elections do I

Call their bluff asnd give notice to quit. They'd be stuffed without CCFC.. I'd rather ground share with Birmingham (heaven help us) than give into to these blinkered short sighted twats ! Nuneaton and the Butts too small.

So it is now official. Coventry city council leader stated sisu have threatened to liquidate the club.

And you all scoffed when some of us said we won't be in the existence of life let alone the ricoh

Would Birmingham want to share their ground with us? Why should the rent be lowered? we signed the deal, we didn't have to and we now have to live with that. It would be interesting to find out who was apart of the initial negotiations.

I completely agree.

But something baffles me - Mr. Mutton is pointing to sisu threatning to put the club in liquidation. Where does he have that information from?
Has he been directly informed by sisu or is he relying on Keys tweet ('Now I hear SISU want to put the club into liquidation to rip out any last assets.').

Are there no journalists on that paper?

Why should they lower the rent as well? That's SISU's problem and they need to sort it out. I am sure if we had different owners then the Council etc would be willing to have discusssions but the facts are they don't like SISU either.

I would say it's the club's problem.

You say that the Council are not acting independantly of who they are dealing with? That they would favour dealing with Hoffman and Elliott?
Wouldn't that be corruption?

No, what is he is saying is that the council are quite rightly refusing to deal with SISU as they see them as unfit.

Whereas a potential deal with Hoffman would be far more preferable given the financial credentials the man has, not to mention having the club and the city's best interests at heart.

This is not corruption, this is being sensible with public money.

I wonder .... if TF did say it whilst trying to talk about a rent reduction if it was a negotiating position ..... then I wonder if he had an alternative plan or two when he said it ............ just a thought

Could be ... but would he be able to say that with the mandate of sisu?
And ... if he said something in that line at a meeting with ACL, how did it spread to Richard Keys?

Mutton stated sisu threatened to liquidate the club at meetings

Of course SISU are going to use every tool at their disposal to try to get a rent reduction. Possibly they perceive that the Council have more interest in keeping CCFC alive than they do. Mutton's comments certainly appear to demonstrate an emotional attachment.

So there have been talks everyone agrees on that ............ from the reports i have read everyone agrees there have been no negotiations ...... Daniel Gidney very clear on radio that ACL are not negotiating with CCFC or SISU ....... yet Mr Mutton implies CCFC should be negotiating not threatening. DG & TF both say talks (not negotiations) have been going on and that they have been very supportive of CCFC. Clearly CCFC have financial problems and you would have to live on the far side of the moon not to realise that there is a possibility that the club could be liquidated. It is also in no ones interest to let that happen.

Too much effing posturing going on

Agreed. I fear a media lead punch up. I really do fear for citys existent.

I think what we are seeing is the aftermath of posturing for a good year now. We can expect much more now and the only winner will be the coventry telegraph.

I expect the Telegraph will barely mention it again!

Expect tomorrows back story to be McSheffrey or Baker talking about 'putting on a show for the fans on Sunday'.

Agreed. I don't believe SISU are about to put the club into liquidation on the basis of a vague unsubstantiated comment by John Mutton-a man with his own position and image always high in his thoughts, similar to Keys.

10000 fans buy season ticket average 350 each.

Total. 3.5 million.

Rent. 12 months @ 100,000

Total. 1.2 million

Leaving 1.8 million

How can they not afford the rent. Lol

The rent is expensive and I suspect that there is a large profit margin built into the rent costs but surely the council would be better off with half the current rent rather than no income at all?

The other option which I could SISU doing is approaching the Coventry RFC and ask how much to play there, the RICOH although a great stadium is the biggest problem the club has! We don't get much income from the stadium, we aren't going to fill the stadium any time soon and the Council aren't keen to sell.
