Cov Sphinx Saturday 28 Dec (1 Viewer)

Anyone up for watching Coventry Sphinx on Saturday 28 December? I went to see Sphinx last Saturday, for the first time ever. Easy to get to, free parking and just a fiver to get in (£3 concessions and under 16s free if they are with an adult which is excellent given all the concerns about the next generation of football fans in Coventry). Very nice clubhouse with bar. Cup of tea at pitchside kiosk for a quid. I had very low expectations but the standard of football was better than I thought it would be - Ashley Cain was playing. There's one tiny shelter otherwise you stand at the barrier that runs round the pitch. Atmosphere was...relaxed. Average crowd is about 140 so don't expect any noise! I didn't realise that Sphinx is an OAP ie over 65 years old with its roots in the Coventry motor industry - definitely part of our local heritage. Their next home game clashes with Swindon away but then they are home on Saturday 28 December. Every now and again someone suggests we have a kcic day out at a different sporting event so seems like a good opportunity. And if you turn up and hate it at least you will have donated £5 to a Coventry team that plays in Coventry.

Thanks Michael - I’ve put this in my diary, and I’ll take the family. This could be the start of something new.

For the benefit of myself and anyone else thinking of going, could you just confirm kick-off time and best directions to the ground?

Nice one, Norman! It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but on the basis of don't knock it till you've tried it certainly worth a visit.

It's 3pm ko on the 28th v Alvechurch - Sphinx's results and fixture are at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/coventrysphinx/s/fixtures-results-65072.html and location/map are at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/coventrysphinx/location/

Been saying for ages we should have a designated game for a local club to pack out.

Could always contact SKY and say we are all going to watch this game instead of going to Sixfields.

Mind you, it would have to be a desperately slow news day for them to even bite!

Are we agreeing on something Nick? That really would be a first! I don't think it's about trying to get more numbers than at sixfields or anything like that, just low key, watching some football in Coventry and hopefully chucking a few quid the way of a local team

Does no harm to show fans are out there, looking for something to do though, so all for the idea. Doesn't have to be set up as a rival to Northampton CCFC either, just showing people are out there rather than let them drift away.

Working in the morning, but may well come along. Rugby's my local side, but no problem in trying out somewhere else if I can make it.

Michael, I’m a bit confused by this. You say you agree with Nick, who talks about “packing out” a local club, but the only way to achieve that would be to PROMOTE the event widely and attract media interest. At the moment, this is just an idea quietly hidden away on a forum!

OK, going to Sphinx will partly be a simple wish to see some local football. To put this in the kind of terms which Mr. Fisher would use, my previous supplier no longer offers the product I require, so I’m looking for a new provider, who will benefit from an increase in “ticketing revenues”.

But at the same time, a really big attendance at Sphinx (maybe repeatedly) could bring some of the best publicity yet for the cause of returning CCFC to Coventry.

Yeah it's all in how you promote it.

Doesn't have to be a DON'T GO TO SIXFIELDS COME TO THIS INSTEAD

Can be a 'by all means go to Sixfields, but if you're dead set against it or just can't get there, why not this instead'

And that would be enough, better than 3 people and a dog extra.

I'm going, the way to promote it is to not mention,SISU or northampton or CCFC, just try to use the words local and Coventry i.n any promotion

Sorry to cause confusion, Norman. It was just a joke about agreeing with Nick. To be absolutely clear, I don't want to drag Sphinx or any other local team into all the conflict around ccfc. Who knows what the future holds - a return to the Ricoh, a new stadium, afc, liquidation, a merging of ccfc and ntfc? The future is filled only with uncertainty. So the 28th really is about an opportunity for people who want to meet up with friends and family to watch a game of football in Coventry over the festive period. Some people will like it, some people won't. In the new year kcic needs to decide what to do next and there are several possible options but the 28th will hopefully just be an enjoyable afternoon and provide a bit of extra income for a local club

Could say we agree, could say you are weeks behind though, if not months :whistle::p:p I can't remember the exact date I said if we packed out a non league game it would get publicity both at Sixfields (it would be empty) and the non league game (record high).

It is ok, you can have that one though!

Might just give this a whirl.

Will have to check if I'm free that day.

Nice thing about the 28th is I don't think it clashes with anything else - Oldham game is the 29th and Cov rfc (my other way of spending Saturday afternoons) aren't playing that day
