To have our top scorer on 4 goals when nearly half of the season is complete, with the top scorer in the division on 12, really illustrates where our problems lie.
Here's hoping one of them goes on a McNulty style 2nd half of season blitz from now on...

We’re 9th, what ‘problems’ are there to speak of? In the last 10 games we’ve lost 3 games. We went on a great run and now we’re dipping, which is natural.
This team is very much a work in progress, and the phrase ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ springs to mind. We’ve got a talented young team which needs a few more experienced pieces added to take it to the next level.
It should be fairly obvious to all the ‘experts’...

One thing I would say, I know we missed a good few chances against Fleetwood, but in general we don't create a load of opportunities. It was the same last season until the run in. For all his qualities Robins' style of play can be a bit, let's say, reserved. Even if you had one of those weeks where you take nearly all your chances we're not going to beat someone 4 or 5-0, because we barely create that many chances. We may have a half where we create a few and take one or two, and then we basically play 10 men behind the ball for the rest of the game like Doncaster. It's been said a million times in here, we just don't commit enough men forward, or get enough men in the box.

Disagreed. We create clear cut goal scoring chances but we haven’t been taking them. With that in mind, there’s only so much you can blame on the manager. Chaplin’s misses v Sunderland and Fleetwood, or JCH’s miss v Pompey, and Thomas’ miss v P’boro (to name a few) are down to individual errors and change outcomes of games.
When we score the first goal, we tend to win, because the way we play suits defending a lead. However, when we concede first, especially away from home, we struggle. The Charlton result was definitely an outlier.
It comes as no surprise that, like last season, our results against the top 6 is good, but we struggle v lower to mid-table teams.

No, it's exceptionally rare to concede so few goals we did at the beginning of last season. And we really struggled for goals first half of last season.

Seems to imply that we’re doing well, only 3pts off where we were last season. When we finished in the playoffs.
As a fan base, we’re overly negative. With one of the youngest teams in the division, we’re 9th and 5pts off the playoffs. Yet for the last month, all you hear is how we’ve signed ‘failures’, our strikers ‘can’t’ score, our captain is ‘past it’, Bayliss is ‘lightweight’ and the system ‘isn’t working’.
I seem to remember earlier on in the system, people were admiring Accrington Stanley for being in the playoffs. We’re currently ahead of them.
Take it for what it is, a bad run coming off a good run. If things deteriorate and we’re in the bottom 8 or so, then question everything.
It’s as if we’ve decided over night that we should be in the playoffs because we’ve spent a decent amount of money. But, promotion doesn’t happen over night, especially when we’ve only just been promoted ourselves.
The teams that are successful in this division are either teams that shouldn’t really have been relegated in the first place, think Blackburn, Bolton, Wolves and potentially Sunderland. Or, teams that have built themselves up over years.

Just thought it was an interesting comparison to see how closely related this year has been on the last. 23 goals conceded in 20 games, with much the same defence and in a league higher is still very respectable. In terms of game plan I think we're doing much the same as the first half of last year with some quite similar results, it's just that the standard of opposition has increased and our mistakes have been punished more.

My point would be, League One players will miss good chances. I'm sure even Luton / Sunderland who have scored a staggering amount of goals in comparison have too missed say six or seven guilt-edge chances this season. We're highlighting them because we're not scoring enough, while they are creating so many opportunities it doesn't matter.

Interesting point about the money. Is it that those teams shouldn't have been relegated or that they had much more money than everyone else when they did come down? Would have thought much of the current table corresponds quite well to average gates/income with the exception of bradford who are a bit of a clusterfuck this year.

Interesting comparison that to be fair. I didn't realise it was soo close and we're on the same amount of goals scored. You learn something new every day. I guess it's frustrating to see that if we had someone troubling the top of the scoring charts, we'd be further up the table. I know that's an obvious thing to say but it just rankled a bit that after nearly half the season gone, our top scorer is only on a third of the leagues top scorer.

Yeah listen, I'm not having a big moan or anything...those who've been on here long enough know that's not my style.
I'm totally on board with all you've written above about 'work in progress' etc etc. It's just the inconsistency that's alarming although supporting Cov for 38 years, I should be used to it. I was merely meaning that if we had someone in the first half of this season, playing like McNulty did in the 2nd half of last season (ie, towards the top of the scoring charts), we'd be much happier.
As mentioned on the post above, an obvious thing to say but accurate all the same.
