Oldham fans were quite disappointed to miss out on him. I thin he'll be a decent asset this year, mainly for his versatility.

Or a fairly inncuous phrase, the likes of which Thorn is not alone as a football manager in trotting out as part of a larger interview. Could he have said 'this is a match we really should be winning' instead? Yes, probably. Does what he say (particularly qualified by the phrase which follows it) have any merit in its use? Possibly, yes. I am not fully signed up to the idea that you can highlight phrases within a larger press conference and use it to make generalisations about the manager. They all talk in cliches, judge what you see on the pitch, not a handful of consecutive words (not a direct dig, I know you have been patient with Thorn - just a general observation of the site).

Pretty much-you very rarely hear a manager say 'They're total crap, we're going to walk it'; they'll always say something like 'We need to be professional' out of respect for the other team.

Could have said something like "it's a tricky tie at a small ground so we'll have to be careful to avoid complacency".
