A goal conceded today where seconds before the goal is scored, nearly all of our players are in the 6 yard box.

If this is a deliberate thing, it needs binning off. We generally don’t seem to know what we’re doing at free kicks and corners, but to just allow the other team an unmarked player on the edge of the box just makes especially little sense. Aside from that we are still struggling to win the ball in with everyone brought back and are panicking on the ball if we do leading to a hoof or recycling it back into the danger zone.

Keep it simple-leave a few players up to give those defending a simpler task.

Fully agree bsb, we did this in previous two games, allowing the opposition to gain possession from our initial defending of corners.
Enough quality in championship to take advantage - and also other teams will see how we are defending set pieces.

Set pieces have always been our Achilles heel. Cannot defend them and cannot score from them (especially not after Hamer left).

All it seems to be doing is giving Dovin a very difficult task while allowing the opposition nearly the entire pitch to work with free of charge.

Leave two up top like before then they need 3 players back so not as much confusion in and around thr box for defender's or goalkeeper and leave someone on the edge of the box.

We did for a bit, and the opposition left 4 back. However, I’m toying with the idea that if you leave loads up (ultra high risk, I know) then the opposition will have to be very selective who they send up for corners. If they send up their centre backs then your own attackers could have an opportunity against effectively a makeshift defence.

I’m going to mull on this a bit more. I think there’s something in it.

I think 3 is enough to make the opposition do that, one on each flank and one down the middle. In that scenario we still have 8 back defending the corner against 6 or 7 which ought to be enough.

We basically just want the box to be more easily defended while also giving plenty of counter attacking options.

Right, this may sound bonkers, but 3 on halfway spread right across the pitch, 2 on the edge of the centre circle, 2 a reasonable distance outside the box almost covering the possibility of a short corner. That’s 7 players outside the box. By the law of ‘general consensus’ that means the opposition will have 8 of theirs outside the box, then keeper and corner taker. Would it actually play out that they’d have one person in the box for the corner? If so, from a fixed position, you’d have to back one defender plus a keeper that could catch.

Edit: and if they committed more forward and you win the ball you’ve immediately got numerical superiority and plenty of players in very good spaces to win the second ball and link with each other.

I am sure we did this a few seasons ago against us.
Pretty sure it was a lower Club, but they put about four on the halfway line

Think I lost my mind on this last season when the zonal marking had Jay da silva marking Keiffer Moore in the six yard box. Wonder if a set piece coach could be looked into as it’s just painful how many unforced errors we have at set pieces. Pre season we did look good at attacking them tho so hopefully that will come back.

We used to petrify teams having 2 left up and the ability the break quickly. Now its easy pickings for teams to win second ball

We let one in v Oxford from not clearing a free kick and obviously the Bristol city one but binks was fouled after he headed it away and the striker was offside

Just looked briefly so may be wrong, but in our last 8 games of last season we conceded 3 from corners and 2 from other set pieces. That I’d imagine is significantly out of kilter with general averages.

Going against the grain here but I’ve been mystified by the reaction to Latibeaudiere and Binks on Saturday.
Latibeaudiere coped q well with an extremely physical centre forward. He made some very good clearances but virtually all of his good work was either physical wrestling with his man 30 yards out or a last ditch corrective action. Overall I thought he was the pick of our outfield players across the whole 90 but it was all a bit desperation mode.

Binks on the other hand was consistently caught on the wrong side of his attacker. His positional play is really starting to worry me. All teams have to do against us is to pump the ball behind him into the space between him and the left back and it’s a recipe for trouble. He was really lucky not to get booked for a terrible tackle on Bird - the ref played advantage allowing Sinclaire to shoot straight at Dovin and his reckless tackle on Wells in the second half was lucky to be a yellow - Wells managed to jump out of the way before he made contact. Yet I’ve seen several folk say how immense he was and Ccfcanalyst on twitter even gave him motm as he “got an assist for the goal” while Dovin “did the things we should expect from him”

Somebody tell me what I’m missing with the Binks love in. In the two away games I’ve witnessed this season I thought he was a liability.

Dovin was excellent, and as I say Latibeaudiere coped well. Bidwell did make one incredible emergency block - which the replay shows he did not handle despite the Bristol player’s protest. MVE was hampered by Sakamota not having space in front of him but did lots of things well in defence.


I think it’s probably very difficult for a defence behind an overrun midfield so maybe I’m being harsh but I’m puzzled as to why so many think Binks has had a good start to the season.
