Dennis Law RIP (2 Viewers)

[The Great Eastern]

Passed away today from alzheimers and vascular dementia. Truly a quality player in the 1960s and one member of the great Man Utd side of that era.
I saw him play at Highfield Rd a couple of times and you could tell he was utterly adored by his teams supporters.

Your first wasn't the Sunderland cup game on the Monday before by any chance, another great game. More in that night officially just over 40,000 but gates broken down behind us and many more got in for free..

Yep, absolutely right. My Grandad, a Mackem from South Shields took me to the Sunderland game, and then queued a couple of days later for tickets for the Man U game. What a night, as you say, broken down gates, the attendance thought to be nearer 50,000. A privilege to be at those games, eh?

But we scored first through Terry Bly in front of a 44,000 crowd. I remember the newspaper report that said 'when the cheering had died down to a crescendo'. Great times

My favourite Denis story was when playing against England in the home internationals for those who don’t know what that as it as a 4 team competition with Northern Ireland and wales also in it and back then only 3 games were shown live annually

Anyway just before kick off his united team mate nobby stiles ran up to the half way line and held out his hand to shake the hand of Denis and wish him good luck.

I was at the Sunderland game in 1963, but it wasn't my first as I was a supporter early in the Jimmy Hill period.

If I have the right game, I got home from school and saw in the Evening Telegraph that the Club needed help to clear the straw that had been laid to protect the pitch from snow and ice. So I bolted my tea and headed to Highfield Rd, about a 15 minute walk from Strathmore Ave. A large group of volunteers cleared the pitch and then we were allowed to stay in the ground for free to watch. I doubt if we were included in the official gate, but it was very crowded on the Kop, so kids were allowed over the barriers to sit in the straw on the edge of the pitch to see a great game.

Followed a few days later by another great game that unfortunately we lost against Man U. My friends and I were next to some Reds supporters on the Kop and they seemed genuinely impressed by the way we played.

Amazingly I followed this up with a look at this page Matchday Memories: On This Day 1963 – Sky Blues Stun Sunderland In Cup (H.R.Splits Its Seams)! : Coventry City Former Players Association || CCFPA
and I think there is a picture of my brother Jon and I at that game. I would have been 15 and he was just 11.

It's the picture of the chap with the megaphone - me with the top edge of the megaphone on my left cheek and Jon directly in front of it.
I just sent it to him and he thinks it's definitely me and remembers sitting in the straw too but not clearing the pitch, and his partner thinks it was definitely him. What are the chances of that !
