Did SP sign the wrong players? (1 Viewer)

Did he sign Swanson & O'Brien as out and out wingers in an intended 442?
If he genuinely thought those players could play anywhere across the middle then fine, no problem...
But if he signed them for a 442 and then decided to switch to 352 leaving us with the wrong personel, that is nothing short of negligence.

The odd thing is when he first came here he wanted to play one up front and five in the middle... then saw what players we had and adjusted as a result.

So... 451, 442, 352? Perhaps SP should make up his mind. We can't afford new players each time he watches a tournament and has an epiphany.

Last year he seemed to acknowledge that pace was essential... and this year he seems to almost have forgotten about this.

Hardly a football philosophy is it?

Well it was more...

Another sign of a good manager is common sense and showing flexibility. He did that by changing his formation to the players but... with a blank canvas this season, you'd assume he'd hav kept the same formation that worked the previous season.

Still time for it to all work out mind you!

There is... But as my OP asks... With the right personel?

It's even stranger when you think he let Adams go when he would have made a very good wing back, he was losing the plot at the end of last season as well when he was playing Seaborne and Willis at left back and Adams left midfield.

Swanson isn't an out and out winger, prefers to come inside. O 'Brien is not an out and out winger. Both could probably do a job across the whole of midfield.

Well that's good then. Is that what he signed them for do you think?

Maybe he could not bring in the players he wanted to so brought in the best players his budget would allow. And now he is left with the problem of finding a system for these players.

And if this is right wouldn't the negligence be on the side of SISU as it is them that said they would finance our move to Northampton and have reveived about 4m in transfer fees so far this year?

That's what we have been constantly told one of the best in this league.
All based on speculation? Or fact?
Ok, maybe the question should be did he buy the best within his budget? Maybe!
Tudgay and Johnson probably ate up the main wage budget, the former here for a career boost/revival much like Clarke got, as for the rest after these two we probably got what we could pay for!
You get what you pay for, lets not forget most on here the last 2 days are critising a league one squad that lost to what was basically a premiere league squad.

Slaughtered the manager.
Slaughtered the team.
Slaughtered the youth players.
For what, looking bad against a top championship team, we are league one ffs, its not a blip, we have been for a few years now.
I hate it, i was born the year we were promoted to the top flight, and in all reality apart from from one magical cup run havnt really seen anything that makes me think we are or ever have been the "big club" a few on here see us as!
We are where we are, its no coincidance, 20-25 yrs of poor club management leads us to where we are now.
Jeeze i remember a guy running onto the pitch throwing his shirt at the dugout in disgust, we were shouting Milne out at the time! I was probably 10 maybe 12 going with the flow, didnt really understand what was going on but everyone else was shouting it!
Ring any bells?
Nothing has fking changed, just more money in the game and we are getting less of it!

I think he is trying to develop different systems for different situations so we have flexibility as a group.

He said the other day re striker we need something different either big or pace. I think He will go with what he can get.

There are plenty of players who have pace, but it is having pace with the ball at your feet that sets someone apart. That is less easy to find with our pocket.

Still think it is early days. I think he has done reasonably well with what we can afford. I would have liked McAnuff, Higdon and Leigertwood.....probably being too ambitious and unrealistic.

Out of interest Samo, who do you think he has missed out on (obviously no guarantee we would have got them) but I'd be interested to know who you would have targeted?

It wasn't particular players I was talking about Hobo, it was positions. If I was going to play 352 I would have bought midfielders to suit that system. (within the restraints of the budget of course) I have only ever heard Swanson & O'Brien described as wingers so I would have thought they are better suited to 442?

I always thought Swanson was an attacking mid/midfield rather than out and out winger? But I might be wrong.

I hope you're right. As I say, only ever heard them called wingers, even described as such on the CCFC site.

I had a theory that's it's about the academy. If you look at the players coming through (and the ones that have come through) there's no wingers and lots of attacking fullbacks.

As we play the same system all the way down, perhaps when given the chance to remould the first team he went for something that could be played at all levels?

Or maybe I'm clutching at straws.

When has he ever said he wants only one system? But I think what Shmmeee says may be behind his thinking. One thing he has said is you need to be able to adapt to different situations without loosing faith in your strengths.

He has signed all the right players but not necessarily in the right order!

What comes first the players or the system .......

If it is the system then the responsibility is for the manager to bring in the right players for the positions within the budget he has

if it is the players then the system has to fit the squad available and to get the most out of that squad

Right now it is difficult to see how it has been prioritised

Whether certain players going had a bearing who knows. We'd signed quite a few before Wilson left.

Could be the case certainly fp .

The question I have though is how were CCFC going to have a playing budget unless Wilson left? They wouldn't have based the budget on winning the JR and a return to the Ricoh would they, and I don't think there is an appetite for SISU/ARVO to lend more money. If the sale was "planned" sometime ago so that there was a budget then surely the purchases would take that in to account?

I would guess we will never know

Can't really comment or make any sensible judgements till we're at least 10 games in, definitely require at least a couple more signings but several things looked much more promising in the 2nd half.

Looking forward to tomorrow's challenge, however a confidence boost would be good.

Mucho look forward to, particularly our new hero, Reda PUSB!
