I think you heard that incorrectly. The maximum wage of 20 pounds was abolished in late 1961 for the top players of the day. In 66 most of the World Cup winners were still on 100 or so.Heard him on the radio talking about when he signed pro for Cov, his parents came in with him (no agents ) he said the average weekly wage for a shop floor worker was around £6.50 a week in 1962 he was offered £185 a week...so they were earning a lot in those days too but absolute legend for me and a few years back he took the half line challenge and scored too
