No. If you recall I said Brown should have called an election earlier. Are you now agreeing with that point?

Was the cost of living payments or the COVID funds in their respective manifestos, or do major external events come outside manifesto promises?

Of course influences come in which is why you can’t make parties stick to a manifesto when they change leaders and that leader you don’t like

everyone on here have got want they wanted - Johnson gone - enjoy the next two years

Point I was making was BSB said they make shit picks but fact is the last one they picked won a landslide in an election, so the people did actually get to decide and agreed with them. May didn't get a majority but did have more seats than any other party. So those members would argue that they don't make bad decisions because when given a vote the people to some extent or another agrees with them.

However, I think that would change quite dramatically right now...

As far as I can remember, Johnson got an 80 seat landslide by attracting 42% of the vote (not the total electorate). Of those people that voted, presumably 58% didn’t want him.
It strikes me that to end up with the result we did shows that the first past the post system is simply wrong. The last three elections my vote has counted for nothing as the Tory candidate got in every time (same for Tory voters in Labour seats, I know).
We need a new voting system where every vote counts.

I didn’t want Johnson gone, he was excellent for Labour. I just want an election when a PM no longer commands a majority in the commons.

I'm glad you can work out the difference between isolated changes to maintain a general policy (which they *all* do and *none* of them stick *exactly* to the manifesto) and a cultural shift.

It's really good to pick up the microcosm. We can all do that, as nothing is exact in life when it involves people.

What I find especially bizarre is I agreed with your original point!

I agree with that but at the same time I can't think of another system whereby picking a local representative would be fairer.

But at the same time there's no way an entire elected government should be chosen on that basis as it could totally fail to represent the country as a whole. So as I've said before the other house gets elected via the proportion of votes they got nationally and get a proper voice when considering legislation. It's not perfect as some people will have voted tactically at a local level but it's still better than having them just appointed at the whim of a PM.

It would essentially mean that the upper house would always be a hung parliament, but considering the absolute extremes we've seen under the current system I don't think it would be that bad even if it did lead to a bit of stalemate in the corridors of power.

No we wanted the Tories gone, not just Johnson. Clearly Truss is even worse.

You've got to hand it to them, don't think anyone thought they could find a worse double act than Johnson and Patel but they've managed it.

That tweet is spot on, if the things our government were doing were happening elsewhere we'd be talking about the far right but there just seems to be a passive acceptance by most people, or even worse, people fully supporting what they are proposing.
