Do you want to discuss boring politics? (34 Viewers)

Also the fallacy of the segment of society banging on about reducing foreign aid budgets; the idea of such things is to encourage the indigenous population of beneficiary countries to stay where they are. Appreciate on a practical level there can be misappropriation of funds but not sure it can be fully resolved to ensure all funds reach the intended ‘destination’.
Assuming the foreign aid gets to where it’s supposed to go, and not some politicians pocket or a space programme.

Maybe Brazil would like to contribute more, there was a fantastic carbon capture eco system called the rainforest once upon a time.

How do we get back to 'grown up' politics for lack of a better phrase? If you catch old footage on BBC Parliament its night and day from what we have now despite being not that many years ago.

There was an interview with Kinnock a few months back and to massively paraphrase he was saying you would hugely disagree with other parties but you could have a proper discussion with them and you felt they believed in what they were saying. We're a long way from that now.

Make politics boring again!

Make it all wonky white papers and lengthy interviews with men in brown suits late night on BBC2.

There needs to be a grown up discussion not just here but in Europe and probably further afield about what we are going to do. If you look past the shouting about small boats the percentage of asylum applications that are approved is very high.

So if you want to get numbers down you have to have a conversation about limiting the number of people genuinely in need. That number is going to increase massively in the coming years with global warming, will cause huge displacement.

Uni's are already having financial issues with lower numbers of overseas students coming in, we've created a huge problem for ourselves. As for getting people back out at the end one of the things put forward by our local unis as a huge plus with overseas students is that they stay here on completion of their courses and fill jobs.

We have to make jobs like healthcare attractive to people from our own country. We're bringing in huge numbers because nobody wants to do the work, and if you bring people in to do the jobs you have to let them bring their families or they won't come.

Having seen the conditions that some immigrant workers live and work in its no surprise to me that British people won't do the same. See very little conversation around changing that side of things. If anything the opposite, the second any improvement in workers pay or conditions is mentioned people come out against it.

On the BBC doc about immigration it was interesting that talking about the last 14 years it was quite openly said by those involved that they latched on to the immigration issue as they saw it was a vote winner but behind the scenes were very much pro immigration.

At one point it was said that everyone would line up and agree with the net immigration figure then the second the doors were closed would start lobbying for exemptions to any tighter rules for their department as they knew they'd be fucked otherwise.
Universities have created a huge problem for themselves, they have basically been over trading. it will no doubt be UK students who will end up suffering, not the vice chancellors on half a million pounds salaries.

We’re talking about multiple things here.

On boats I think it’s a fairness thing and the numbers are fairly irrelevant if we can show everyone has genuine need. I’m not sure we can do that, but in theory.

On work I think most would accept high skill workers but we don’t need to import Deliveroo drivers or barbers.

On study I think again as long as people are tracked and leave when they should I don’t think most would care.

The problem is I’m not sure what you could do to make people trust the asylum process and education visa process again.

if Coventry University (London Campus) shuts down I don’t think anyone would shed a tear, but we’ve got some genuinely high quality institutions doing good work in otherwise economic deserts that do rely on (genuine) foreign students.

Me again with my daily whinge, however you wouldn’t expect me not to highlight this

Her and her husband only earn about £760k between them and own a £4m house.

Not sure any of that is relevant. Either you think it’s OK for MPs to claim for a second home or you don’t. She’s not the only MP to claim for one.

It’s an awful look the figure for losing it is way too low

Im not sure I want politicians making policy decisions based on their personal circumstances either way tbh. It’s either the right decision or it’s not, expenses is either the right rule or it’s not.

Monthly bills that size would suggest a larger than average second home - surely unnecessary. She can’t be there all that often either. Should get it insulated properly and a heat pump fitted 😂

She could always follow Farage and say that she won’t claim it. It’s double standards, millionaires getting taxpayers money. Should be means tested.

Hypocrites - the lot of them.

No wonder we need immigration, this needs to be stopped!
Dig a little deeper at the root causes, rather than just blindly believe the headlines of a racist rag.

Not then.

Do they have no awareness?

Dear Admin. Please shut this politics page down. The left wing perspective is draining and damages the good name of Coventry City F.C.
A city with a strong trade union presence, history of fighting racism and that's been electing Labour MPs since the year dot in having some left wing football fans shocker

I agree this thing does annoy me.

However, it's something that isn't against the rules and has been going on for a long time, so again I have to ask where was the outrage before with MP's (from all parties) that were doing it, or flipping homes to get taxpayer's to pay for renovation?

It's shit, I'd like it to be scrapped, but it's hardly a new thing to vent your spleen at.

Also, why isn't there a home in each constituency that is owned by the state that MP's have to use for a base of operation? Like an embassy for MP's?

So MPs from the Highlands, NI, Shetland etc are treated the same as London MPs? Seems a bit silly.

They’ve all got a home at home and all need one in London. The question I guess is London MPs and arguably surrounding areas. I’ve always liked the idea of a house/flat for each MP that needs one given for free for five years, just add bills.
