The reason we’re skint isn’t a few train drivers or MPs or immigrants getting more than you think, it’s because we’ve got a stagnant economy and a demographic time bomb like half the western world.

They said that they’ll take tough decisions that need taking and after finding the clusterfuck the last lot left yes that was one of them. I’ve already said I’d have reversed the NI cut, but I’ll take benefits from the wealthiest demographic as a backup over service cuts.
But the clusterfuck (a) shouldn’t have been a surprise and (b) wasn’t £22 bn according to the OBR.

Disposable income is up since June:

Fixing the economy after 14 years of neglect will take a little longer. But growth is happening even if it’s anaemic as it’s been since the crash.
From the document you linked
GDP: Muted economic growth momentum ahead
Following a rebound at the start of the year, UK GDP growth is expected to have slowed again in the second half of 2024.

and

Labour market: Firms could see easier hiring and wage growth ahead

Yeah inflation has fallen so wage growth will likely fall too.

It’s all a bit silly anyway. No government impact is shown in macroeconomic indicators this early.

It was for Truss, wasn’t it?

That was the markets, which have responded really. But stuff like unemployment GDP etc you won’t see for years really. It’ll depend on structural changes that take a while to implement and work through the system. They haven’t even published their headline bill (planning) yet that’s supposed to do most of the work.

What about Rod Stewart?

Him too.

Look all this may or may not work out but the pure freak out from vested interests tells me it’s worth seeing through. Government after government has pussied out on change after a few poshos rile everyone up and look where it’s gotten us.

Do you think they’re pocketing the money Malc? The question remains what would you cut to that tune to give Elton John his £300?
Was brought up in family of 4
Me and my sister paid nothing for for our keep
Mum worked part time
Dad worked all hours to keep us paying 10 fold.
At Christmas we gave out small gifts should we have told dad to fuck off as he had more money than the rest of us despite being the biggest contributor to our household.

Don’t you mean you should have told Mum and the kids to get back to work so Dad can spend more of his own money on himself?

Would have put up the additional rate of tax by 1% to 46% so he would have paid for it himself. And mine,

In that case we best give the guys who fucked us over immeasurably for 14 years a go. It's about time they had a chance!
Isn’t that the Problem though, the pendulum swings.

Next time it may be Reform who can’t be blamed for any of that history.

Yeah I think additional rate could have gone up. The big mistake was saying they won’t raise IT VAT OR NI, I’ll happily admit that. Though seeing the result I wonder if they’d have won the election if they didn’t. Such is where we are. No one wants anything cut, no one wants to pay more tax. It’s not sustainable. We’ll see how well the other way plays over the pond I guess. I wonder what memes the 2029 Farage govt will name its departments after 🤔

It's a good point if more paid in we'd but in a better position than we are, what I was trying to put across was that I support the case of those that can afford to give more should do so but I wouldn't exclude them on small gifts having paid over and above the contributions they've put in. For someone whose paid in millions to help others £300 is surely a drop in the ocean.

I'm no fan of Starmer but until the day they left power the previous government were blaming the last Labour government so not really sure why 6 months in following 14 years of an absolute shitshow there's an expectation for everything to be sorted, or at least on the way to being sorted.

Sure I'd love to see a bigger vision and for them to do something to inspire hope that there's better to look forward to and there is definitely a large element that feels like more of the same but you've got to give them more than 6 months!

It has only been 5 months, but it has been 5 months of talking stuff down. Anyway, the more important matter of a football match now.

Government response to that petition.

This Government was elected on a mandate of change at the July 2024 general election. Our full focus is on fixing the foundations, rebuilding Britain, and restoring public confidence in government.
The Prime Minister can call a general election at a time of their choosing by requesting a dissolution of Parliament from the Sovereign within the five-year life of a Parliament. The Government was elected by the British people on a mandate of change at the July 2024 general election.
This Government is fixing the foundations and delivering change with investment and reform to deliver growth, with more jobs, more money in people’s pockets, to rebuild Britain and get the NHS back on its feet. This will be built on the strong foundations of a stable economy, national security and secure borders as we put politics back in the service of working people.
On entering office, a £22 billion black hole was identified in the nation’s finances. We inherited unprecedented challenges, with crumbling public services and crippled public finances, but will deliver a decade of national renewal through our five missions: economic growth, fixing the NHS, safer streets, making Britain a clean energy super-power and opportunity for all. This is what was promised and is what we are delivering.
The Government’s first Budget freed up tens of billions of pounds to invest in Britain’s future while locking in stability, preventing devastating austerity in our public services and protecting working people’s payslips.
Mission-led government rejects the sticking-plaster solutions of the past and unites public and private sectors, national, devolved and local government, business and unions, and the whole of civil society in a shared purpose. The Government will continue to deliver the manifesto of change that it was elected on.

The Bold emphasis is mine. Its at odds with what some have stated on here, certainly wasn’t my understanding.

In what way? The Fixed Term Parliament act was repealed in 2022 so from that point on its up to the PM when he wasn't to call an election.
