Fella next door escorted out - would love to read in a few days that the two houses were connected and the police helped the fella leave under their noses whilst they watch an empty house for a few days.

I’m within the cordon now, they’ve extended it. Pretended I wasn’t going to the city arms to get out.
It reminds me of the unexploded bomb scare in Belgrade Plaza in 2008. The police set up a cordon wide enough to contain an atom bomb, let alone the 50Kg bomb that was actually unearthearthed.

I posted at the time (in the now defunct Telegraph forum) I thought it was more an exercise in control over the civilian population than for the safety of the public.

You can judge for yourself whether I was being unncecessarily cynical or if events since then have proven me correct?

I think we can safely say you’re being unnecessarily cynical. Societal behaviour means that the police have to be ridiculously over the top in terms of safety or Dawn and Keith off Facebook will start petitions holding them to account. If this bloke somehow has a gun/bomb and injured or killed an innocent member of the public during this ordeal, you’d probably be calling for someone from the force to serve time for neglect. They have to plan for the very worst case scenario even if it seems ridiculously over the top because we’ve created a culture that any possible mistake results in criminal charges. If my job entailed the same pressure and threats, I too would be as risk averse as you could possibly imagine

At what point do the police change tactics to actively try and end the hold up.

We're going to see this bloke do a Julian Assange at this rate.

Really not sure where this is all going. He (as far as I know) has made no demands (fish finger sandwich not withstanding) and from the pictures his child is clearly 'safe and well'.

No matter what he may or may not be on he hasn't stayed awake for 5 days so they clearly aren't making any attempt to get in so what now? Just wait potentially weeks until he's had enough.

What happens if he starts asking for food but says he needs it for the kid? If this is all about his welfare they can't turn that request down and potentially stave the kid so how does this come to a conclusion?

Police knocked the front door at 3:30am last night to get my uncle to move his car so they could setup the toilet apparently. I didn’t hear it. Not on really.

Just reread that thought you'd said something. So it's all over then. Wonder what prompted that all of a sudden.

It's pretty clear they had enough of the neighbourhood. Some residents coming in at 4am swaying, and others refusing to move their cars.

It's a bit like War of the Worlds when the Tripods get killed off by earths natural resources.
