The problem with it all is there is so much money involved. Getting promoted from the championship is worth something ridiculous like £150 million, not allowing promotion could leave the EFL and PL open to massive law suits in terms of loss of earnings. Even from L1 to champ there’s a fair bit of money involved. If it was under halfway through the season it would probably be justifiable to void the season.
Where we are now, it’s not really justifiable, and if for example they give Liverpool the league title but void the lower leagues then they open themselves up to legal action. With Liverpool so far ahead as well they can’t not give Liverpool the title.
Another thought, a team like us, if we don’t get promoted this season, we could be mid table next season and relegated the season after, the loss of earnings that would incur for the club is massive, and SISU loving a bit of court action would be all over it like a rash.
There’s no easy way out of this for the league. If I was in charge I would promote those in promotion positions. Those in play offs play the play offs when it is safe to do so. No relegations, and just filter the extra teams out of each league over a few years with an extra relegation spot each season. That way no club in the relegation zone is penalised, no club in the play offs are penalised. It may upset those one or two spots outside the play offs, but I think it’s the fairest option
