Seems very much to be a confidence player.

When he’s confident and on form – he’s great. When he’s low on confidence he looks shite.

Just need one to go in off his arse or something to give him a boost and hopefully go on a run.

The difficult bit for MR of course is do you keep picking him when he’s playing poorly, and if you drop him is that going to knock his morale even further.

He scores a goal at Watford played semi decent that game .. then went missing since

I don't want to bash players , but we've always needed our forwards to drop in and work and it just doesn't come from ellis at all .. and this actually feels like playing a man down alot of the time.

Rudoni doesn't work as hard as cal used to and the reality is we've lost so much energy in the team

He has scored in 10 of the 53 league matches he's appeared in and has scored 1 goal in his last 13 games , he is our main striker .

If he was contributing and working hard you can look past it but He isn't working hard and isnt at all involved in matches barring the goal at Watford which was nice.

Mad that I made this post but the reality is he had a good 4 month spell between new year and April.
Probably fair tbh!

You only need a couple of players to drop off for any sort of pressing system to fall apart and I think that's the case with us this season. Godden and O'Hare both pressed well and with purpose.

The only time I've seen aggressive football was when he put Doyle in the net at the start of the game against Norwich but still went over and shook his hand to say sorry, then Doyle done a job on Tats no apology. He's just not aggressive enough for me,he looks like he just smoked a joint before the game.

Yeah Godden wasn’t quick at all and not often involved when we had the ball, but he was always working hard off the ball.

Because he got high

I was gonna score a goal but I got high

Might be me but I just don’t think being a single striker suits Simms. He’s too isolated most of the time trying to get in behind without the pace to allow him to break at speed.

Put another striker who will do the press work like Norman or BTA to chase down balls and play off defenders shoulders and allow simms to play as an outlet trying to flick it on would be better imo.

Urrrgghh... here we go again. His record before us was fine. For a time last season he was looking a top player that premier league clubs were looking at and now we have decided he is sh1t again.

We've made exactly the same mistakes with him as we made last season. We stupidly bought too many strikers, feel obliged to play them all and keep mucking around with the team. He was subbed off at 60 minutes in the first game, Robins made some comment about him seeing other players being brought in for his position and he has been in and out the team all season, as have half a dozen other players. His confidence looks shot but the whole team is a mess.

The fact that his pressing isn't the best is fair but we had some fantastic all round performances with him last year. People keep focusing on individuals because it's an easy fix but at the moment everything is wrong. Are we seriously doing the Godden thing again? Really? He has scored less goals than Simms this season and he is playing in league 1. If we play them consistently, Simms, Wright, EMC will find form.

I agree.

I don’t think he’ll ever be a pressing forward though, that doesn’t seem to be his game at all.
Me too think as a traditional target forward who can hold the ball up and unleash a pacy option however is where he’ll shine.

Or as a poacher but then we have to acknowledge he won’t get involved in the play or press as much as other players.

So simms is playing shit because we have 3 strikers at the club ?

He's started 6 out of 7 games and played between 60 and 75 minutes in them all really it's no excuse

It is totally reasonable to make observations about Simms - he has played in over 50 games and only scored in 12 of them. He is a physically strong player but often does not do enough. He is a highly paid employee and at present is not delivering.

But to be a target forward you've still got to work constantly, move about make angles, drop back with your back to goal. He does none of it consistently.

When Eccles was pressing for him against Swansea, either Simms wasn’t doing what he was told or Eccles was pressing against instructions. Think I know what is more likely.

Agreed evo, he’s a decent championship striker at best, nothing more

One thing robins sides have always done is work hard. Think if he won’t press either we work around that or we move him onto the bench. Eccles doing that for him hurt us more than him simply not doing it.

Last season his only competition was only Godden so it was a no brainer that we should be going with Simms, this season I'm not so sure, not convinced BTA is any better and not seen enough of Bassette yet.

BTA will however work incredibly hard

The question is what is better? Will score more goals? Will harass the opposition? WIll create chances? I'm not defending Simms, but as a fanbase we have always had an issue with players who look lazy, Bothroyd, Kyle, Best etc, and loved players who run around Morrell etc. The question really is, does Simms do the job the manager expects of him. We all have our thoughts, but ultimately we will see that in whether he starts or is moved to the bench

This side had a decent balance of energy experience and quality , add O hare into this we have lost alot of quality and energy in 18 months .

We needed to add some quality loans and some experience this summer in hindsight

I think Simms can be better than what he is most of the time .

And that's more on him than anything else

Robins indicated he was unsettled by the number of strikers brought in and he is clearly a confidence player. Knowing the hook is coming and sitting on the bench isn't helping.

BUT - I'm not even sure I am in agreement with your comment that he is playing sh!t. He's not in form but he is still our joint top scorer this season (admittedly with a mighty 2) and his performances haven't been far from the average. We are playing the Southgate formation and he is playing the Harry Kane role. If we don't look good in possession behind him he is on a hiding to nothing.
