With Ali so out of form and Anderson off we're essentially 2 bowlers down with no threatening spinner. The way Smith is going we're going to have to get everyone else out as we don't look close to putting pressure on him.Bowling looks to have gone to pot. We've got nothing to trouble Smith. We're really missing Anderson. Can see Australia leaving us an insurmountable total, and Nathan Lyons ripping us to pieces in our second innings.

398 to win can indeed be written off.I've got sod all to do tomorrow so as its 25 quid going to go up. England and Edgbaston can never be written off. Quick question, can you pay in the gate for anyone that knows? Cant find it anywhere online
That pitch is turning drastically now. One ball from Lyons pitched leg side and ended up way past off stump. What a poor day by england. No chance for england of anything but a draw. Will need to bat sensibly and not give anything away. Aussies will try and upset openers and then unnerve middle order.

More like three - Woakes has hardly featured this innings either.
Annoying we can't change the ball when Australia got to and got a much better one.
If he's that bad then it's unlikely he'll be involved for the rest of the series.Didn't expect to win, or even draw, going in to today but a bit more resistance would have been nice.
No idea why we sent Jimmy out to bat. Bloke could hardly walk down the stairs and couldn't run between the wickets. Why risk sending him out there?
They even said on commentary that he'd made it worse batting in the first innings. Just don't see what we were hoping to gain from it.If he's that bad then it's unlikely he'll be involved for the rest of the series.
Absolute dearth of red-ball talent out on the county circuit. As I mentioned the other day, Burns’ century was unconvincing and he looked like he could be got at any point. ECB have chased the £ in promoting one-day cricket and T20 competitions and by doing so have sidelined the County Championship. Next is The Hundred - for those who can’t quite manage that extra 15 minutes it would take to bowl 20 more balls.
And that's it. 251 run loss. We've got problems.
First problem is finding a way to deal with Steve Smith. We've had no answer to him at any stage in this test, not until.the damage has been done. I know he's a particularly stubborn batsman to get out, but if we want to win this series, it's crucial to find something to trouble him.
Then, it's s our batsmen. We seem to be stuck in the kind of mentality required for limited overs, but it just doesn't work the same for test cricket.
You say that but England have been instigating batting collapses for donkey's years. Also Root is embarrassingly out of his depth as captain
Stokes is the on,y natural leader out there but captaincy tends to ruin good playersCorrect, Root has to be canned as captain. In saying that though, who is the alternative? Very few players secure in the starting 11 at the moment. I was having a think about the team for the 2nd test and have come up with the below:
Burns
Sibley
Root
Roy
Stokes
Buttler/Bairstow/Foakes (form stinks for all 3)
Curran
Woakes
Broad
Leach
Archer
Struggling to justify picking any more batsmen as none of the keepers are remotely close to form and there aren’t many staking a claim in the middle order.

And this reliance on explosive but ultimately limited overs style players - it may only need one or two to have a good innings but if we collapse we do it spectacularly. Having to bat out a day didn't suit their style and it should today when they tried to rein themselves in. But again who's there to grab that place.
The Aussies like Lords and they have Starc to come back in. Could very easily be 2-0 after the next test and a huge battle on our hands.I think this series may well have a 5-0 whitewash written all over it.
Certainly Ashes defeat looks extremely likely.
I agree but I don't understand why we seem to be perennially afflicted by this addiction to collapses out of nowhere.
