Well Ali as opener hasn't particular worked out....no one would have seen that coming.

So we will head off to South Africa with an undercooked opener in Hales who has only learnt how to carry the drinks against Pakistan.

One of my favourite few lines from a book, Notes from A Small Island, Bill Bryson, and it states Pakistan.

....surprising number of headlines from that week could as easily appear today: 'French air traffic controllers strike', 'White Paper calls for Ulster power sharing', 'Nuclear research laboratory to be closed', 'Storms disrupt rail services' and that old standby ofcricket reports, 'England collapse' (this time against Pakistan).

Another self inflicted ignominious collapse. You just knew that would happen

Imagine what we could have done with Pietersen instead of Bell.

I think we have to be realistic, we were always going to struggle with the wicket over there and Pakistan bowled very well. It will be a different story when they come over here against our seamers. South Africa next so no real let up!

I think England will struggle in SA but will hammer Pakistan next summer I think they will bowl Pakistan out for under 100 at least once and under 200 most times.

Agree so why not take more spinners? Unwarranted loyalty when you know it's a mistake, why have a board of selectors if they just pick their favourites all the time? Goughy suggested Tredwell who can bat too and Batty On TS the other night and they would certainly have offered alternative options than what we already knew we would get from that team.

We just don't have the spin at the moment, our current crop are just simply not good enough. Rashid probably our best hope and look what happened to him against their top order in the first test. Equally in tests like this, you win the toss you probably win the game!

Rashid, again as goughy said, plays county cricket with a good seam attack and bowls his spin against the lower order. Batty had top figures for the season but was overlooked

We have 4 class players - cook, root, broad and Anderson and that is it. We're also poor in the spin department, and that will rightly be criticised, but if you don't score the runs you don't have having decent to bowl at. We've had 18 batting collapses in the last 25 matches.

To be fair though, Batty is 38 and was playing in the 2nd Division so has been bowling against inferior batsman.

It's a similar problem to the football argument of lack of quality in many ways. We don't seem to breed spinners so the volume coming through is minimal, I can only think of monty in the last few years who had that natural ability, before that Giles maybe? It's a huge gap which will always limit away tours that require that skill... Sadly

Things haven't got much better with the 1 dayers.

Terrible start, 14-3 including Root getting a duck. Morgan and Taylor recovered to 147-4 and then all out for 216.

Apart from Morgan and Taylor, who put on 133 runs, only 2 partnerships got into double figures. Woakes and Rashid got 19 and Woakes and Willey got 33.

Going to need to bowl very well to have any chance in this.

Yes Dave a lot more solid. At least we are in with a chance. If we can push on and get a good total then take a couple of early wickets we should be in with a shout

Doin gvery well after 30, if we can keep this run rate up we should be close to 300 which unfortunately is the minimal rate these days. Just hope our spinners arnt as expensive as the last innings.

They need to post 325 I think but looking at the order with Willey at 10 and some right dashers to come they should be somewhere near to it.

Good knock by Hales but now need Morgan and Root to smash some around for the last 5. Struggling with boundaries today, be lucky to get 300 but nice to not see the usual batting collapse!

Unless they bowl very well this target is a bit short but under the lights you never know.

Great win, they did what we did in the first odi. The pitch played its part but our bowling attack certainly stepped up to the plate. Well done!

Excellent today. Need to keep it up and get a couple more wins, take the series and then build on it.

Great performance so far today. 355-5 off our 50.

Buttler hit 100 from 46 balls, Englands fastest ever ODI 100, he's also got the 2nd and 3rd fastest.

Into the T20's now. England managed an OK 160-5. Pakistan struggling, 58-4 with just over 10 overs left.

Not England related but some loon at the ECB has decided there will be no coin toss in the county championship next year. The away side will always get the choice to bat or bowl.
