I know we have no money blah blah blah, but he has no job after Brucie left Sunderland. Surely he wouldn't be that expensive as he has never managed other than us. I know he was treated pretty shit but I'm sure he realizes that that was all down to the owners at the time.

I know its a bit of a pointless gesture as we have a manager but I think its time for Thorn to step down/ be moved along and let Black now he is available come back and finish what he started years ago.

Anyone else agree?

As I've said many times, if AT had been sacked at the end of last season fans would have been clamouring for his return too. EB had a successful, but short tenure here. It was good while it lasted, but why go backwards? Who's to say if he'd got the job permanently how it would have worked out?

Really? Why?

Don't think you should go back, sheff is a prime example of this and he should never have come back, it's like an ex it is never going to work if you go back after you have gone your seperate ways.
What happenbs if it did not work out with black?
He would not come back anyway he will just wait for Bruce to get his next job in management.

Based on what he said in the Summer, he will not be coming back. No money, threadbare squad and shit league position just confirm this as a non-starter.

We need a manager who believes in himself and who doesn't mind taking on a club with no money and the threadbare squad mentioned by LBB. Too many managers will want piles of cash to buy players and their own Millennium Falcon to get to work in. If, or when, the time comes to replace AT then we should just pluck someone from the lower leagues with an appetite for a challenge and that all important belief in their own abilities.

Oh, and it shouldn't be Lee Carsley.

Just merely suggested it as it would be someone the fans have confidence in and more ideally he would be cheap. When we had no manager and Thorn took over Sunderland were still doing well so Black would never have come but now he is unemployed its different.
CCFC-Tom He definitely left the club on Tuesday as he said it on MOTD 2 on Sunday.
ICHAN- I appreciate what you're saying but I personally don't think that it was the wrong move bringing back McSheffrey. He is still better than the replacements we had for him while he was gone (McIndoe, Gray, etc.) and on his day can offer the team something a little different and with the right manager who can bring the best out of him could still be an important player for us.

This thread could be me delusionally clutching at anything that might give us a bit of hope as this is the lowest I have ever felt as a Sky Blue.

Now, I agree with you on McSheff. I reckon he's still got it and he's shown flashes of what he can do. Hopefully, there's more to come from him.

Torchie, I completely agree about looking at lower league success, think of the potential suitors we could/ should have taken a gamble on over the last few years, Eddie Howe, Nigel Adkins, Paul Lambert, Lee Clarke, etc.

Maybe we can get Andy Morrell, he's doing alright now isn't he? :)

Keith Hill is the one we missed out on, I reckon. And yes, Eddie Howe would have been useful too.

I'd expect Black to continue in the assistant role, maybe going wherever Bruce inevitably bluffs his way into.

How the fans can still back Mcsheffrey after this season is beyond me, if he wasn't a coventry lad he would be slated by 99% of fans. I had the highest hopes for him after he ended last season fantastically but he has been our worse performer this season.
I would also take Black back without little hesitation.

Why not sack Thorn and appoint Black?

Because Black would not come here, why would he want to?
We may think he has unfinished business here and a point to prove but he has moved on and I would think if he did go into management again it would be with a team with a chance of promotion and unfortunatly we are not looking like that will happen for us for quite some time unfortunatly.

Well, it's beyond you, then. It's got nothing to do with being a "coventry lad". So was Marcus Hall, he was rubbish and should never have made it as far as he did in professional football. On the other side of the coin is Joe Elliott. Mr Coventry himself. Wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

McSheffrey is a capable Championship player who can more than hold his own as we've seen in the past. I still reckon he's got it in him to shine again. Am I wrong? Maybe. Probably. Nothing to do with where he was born though.

I think the pro-Black brigade fail to look at the whole picture when he was in charge. Admittedly he had some spectacular results big wins home and away and our fortunes improved, but he lost a lot too and changed the team after winning 6-1 i think it was to play in the FA Cup against lower league opposition and got beat and that is the game i think that cost him his job in the eyes of McGinnity and co. Probably was harsh sacking him at the time and why not have given him a stab at it BUT he was no messiah.

When Black was in charge we played exciting football and got mixed results. We would take mixed results and exciting football now surely?! Our results are worse than mixed

Personally, I find the opposite to be true - namely that many fans now write off Black as being overrated without carefully scrutinising what he achieved in comparison to other managers (the big picture, so to speak).

McGinnity didn't sack Black because CCFC got knocked out of a cup; he sacked Black because he was an utter fool, blinded by the Premiership bling of Peter Reid. Just like the attempted changing of the badge and legal action against the GMK webmaster, it was another moronic action by one of the poorest, most ill-equipped chairmen we have ever had.

It's worth noting, btw, that fans DID realise at the time what they had in Black - there was the famous 'Black Sunday' where fans protested the insane sacking by wearing black.

It's been nearly eight years since he was sacked. Time has moved on. There's a ton of baggage between CCFC and Black. It's a non-starter to suggest he should/could return. But I'll always be happy to defend what he achieved. Here's a post I wrote a few days ago which I think does assess the big picture...

'1. the average points per game went from 1.2 under McAllister to 1.6 under Black
2. the league win percentage went from 26% under McAllister to 50% under Black
3. the average goals scored per game went from 1.1 to 1.88
4. we scored three goals or more in a third of all Black's games
5. the average point total under Black is playoff calibre the majority of years
6. the average goal difference would have resulted in +33 over the course of a season

And he did all this with a less-than-stellar squad playing some really exciting football. I wouldn't bet on us finding another manager who has that kind of impact on the side anytime soon.

I understand some will say it was the 'new manager effect', but this wasn't merely scraping out a few extra initial wins because of added gut-busting effort to impress the new gaffer. This was a total turnaround over a period of 18 league game where we were really giving a hiding to other teams.

We go from manager to manager looking for that magic touch, and when we finally found the guy he was sacked for being 'inconsistent'. We do need to move on from Black, but it's a huge mistake to dismiss what he achieved and what we lost.'

And as you can imagine McGinnity was up against some pretty stiff opposition.

On current form Mcsheffrey is no better Bell, Baker, Mcindoe is/was who all come in for a lot of criticism. I would agree that on his day he is a capable championship player but his day's are becoming more infrequent as time passes. He is consistently poor with one good game in 10, doesn't really deserve his place in our side at the moment.
