If I’m not mistaken, the team who:
- take the first penalty
- miss first
- are the away team (technically they were)
have a statistical advantage of winning a shootout. Just so happened that Italy ticked all of the boxes.
Might be a bit of a stretch but I think Kane going first was wrong. First penalty is arguably the least pressurised of the lot.
Penalty shootouts favour the away team? Have you got a source for that?
What a stupid thing to say.
Too many people happy enough wallowing in gallant failure and happy enough to lose even when we clearly should win. It’s a big problem, I don’t think any serious contender nation would be as happy to congratulate themselves for majorly blowing it as we are. The place is awash with people saying how “proud” they are- proud of what? We absolutely failed to do what was there for the taking. We’re happy to lose, there is some weird thing in too many peoples psyche where they seem to revel in failure.
If you’re not angry about how that match was thrown down the toilet as opposed to making excuses, well then it just goes to show a loser mentality
I am proud of the team in what they did achieve, disappointed by what they didn't, the two are not mutually exclusive. It doesn't need me to get angry about it but i expect improvement of our national team to continue.
Am i angry about coming so close and just missing out no. I didn't expect them to make the semi finals so the appearance in the final exceeded my own personal expectation of the team pre tournament. I am however very disappointed we didn't really make the best of it in the final. in absolute terms a failure but in reality so much more positive than that.
Did they get things wrong on the day, well yes in my opinion but it is fine margins, they nearly didn't. Said previously Southgate got some things wrong, he also got a lot more right. I would like him to develop a bit more street nous as a manager, to take a bit bigger risks (not gung ho but to go for it when the opportunity arises). Perhaps if so confident of the young players, actually trust them to see it through when the going gets tough not leave them on the bench and increase the pressure on them when they do get on the pitch. He has however done throughout the tournament a great job
It is wrong to undervalue the Italian team by comments of it was ours for the taking. It never was, Italy have been at least as good as England for the whole of Euro 2020. They were never going to roll over and accept it was England's for the taking. There in lies English arrogance and long term failure.
This team is still very young in international terms, that in itself is a big step forward and reason for some confidence.
What does make me angry is the scum that broke down the doors to get in, especially when my daughter was working at Wembley and was within ten foot of it all happening. Luckily she arrived home safe but women she was working with were knocked to the ground and injured. She said it was really scary and the worst experience working at venues she has experienced. Now as her dad that makes me very angry.
Nah we're as far away as ever. Home advantage was our chance I think and now it's gone for however long.Eloquently put, However I feel that we threw it away. But we’re not far away from something special I feel and I want Southgate to stay on.
Spoiling the party is probably less pressure than getting the party started. Kind of makes sense actually.Afraid I can’t find it anywhere, but it was a stat I heard when watching a Champions League shootout about 2-3 years ago (I think it was that recent).
I'm hoping (praying!) that Southgate is another Joachim Löw - who incidentally took 4 major tournaments before winning - Someone who didn't have a great club manager record, pretty much fell into the role and learned on the job.I am proud of the team in what they did achieve, disappointed by what they didn't, the two are not mutually exclusive. I’m sure France felt like this after 2016. I have absolute (and, quite probably, misguided) confidence that we’ll win the World Cup in Qatar.
Separate note, but I’m struggling quite badly with post-tournament blues. Don’t know what to do with myself.

The host nation has not faired well in recent European Championships history. Only Spain and France in 1964 and 1984 has won the tournament as hosts.
Portugal, France and now England (technically we weren’t) have lost in the finals as hosts.
We’re in good shape going into Qatar 2022. For all his flaws, Southgate has got the England playing for one another and they players actually enjoy playing for England rather than feeling like it’s a burden.
For more context, it was a youngest team ever that got us to a final. They have got a big future.
Absolutely. When you think about the players that will have a further 18 months of top level football under their belt (thinking Bellingham, Sancho, Mount, Foden) it’s quite frightening.
One massive concern is that as Harry Kane starts to fade, which hopefully is still at least 3-4 years away, there’s no obvious replacement.

Well, I'm proud of them. No way Italy were gonna roll over and continue to let us have fun after the opening 25 minutes, they came into this game knowing how to win tournaments and on the back of a 33-game unbeaten run, it was never going to be easy against them.
No, just got a shit load of racial abuse after missing a penalty in a football game at 23 years old, after a year of putting politicians to shame with what he’s done for the community and low income families.Has rashford died?

Wow. The community response to just 5 absolute morons shows that we may be winning the war on racism after all and rightly so.5 UK accounts sent racial abuse according to BBC.

Sadly looks like its true as they club have said they've launched an investigation, you'd think if it wasn't true it would be very quickly ruled out.
This is truly disgusting. Hopefully their football career is over.
Hopefully they aren't footballers now and they get a good slap.
Vile arseholes - at least their careers are over before they’ve begun.
Is it genuine?

5 people tweeted from the UK? Feels like 50% of the country the way the media has gone on about it.
Obviously those need to be dealt with, but it goes without saying.
