Neither was McCallum last season aside from his long throws.

Maatsen’s gone off the boil last couple of games but first few matches his link up with O’Hare was excellent.
Yep he’s a year behind Sam. Compare him with the start of last season and I think maatsen compares well

Gervene Kastaneer watch : Still at PEC Zwolle. Started tonights game against Sparta Rotterdam. Currently 1-1 and Kasta has had some nice touches and runs. But football isn't a one man game and there is a reason the club are at the bottom of the Eredivisie with 5 losses and 1 draw to their name.

<edit> Kasta has had a shot blocked on the line.

<edit 2> Couple of good runs into the box and a few shots on target. Kasta subbed at 71 mins.

Had really high hopes for Kasta. I remember when he first got into the team and smacked in a worldie. Mind you, I had high hopes for Ellery Cairo back in the day. I’m trying to think of how many good players from the continent that we’ve signed (ie direct from the continental leagues (Normann, Engonga, Lorentzon), not European players signed from U.K. leagues (Roussel, Nilsson).

Besides Gus, I’m struggling.

Most of these are from our time in the Premier League:

Hadji, Chippo and Safri. Isiais. (All from Portugese clubs IIRC)
Robert Jarni 🤣
Mo Konjic
Aron Gunnarson
Michael Mifsud
Trond Egil Soldveldt
Magnus Hedman

Since we've been in the lower leagues, we haven't had the appeal to get overseas players. Gus is the first for a while.

I guess the first four aren’t European. Gunnar is a good shout - one that if we’d have managed to keep might have made a big difference.

Yeah, 3 from Morocco (French territory ?) and one from Brazil. Could have added Jose Perdomo from Uruguay too ;) But Gus Hamer is a naturalised Dutchman. He was born in Brazil but moved to the Netherlands when he was a kid.

Jose Perdomo. What a player I thought he was (I was a really young kid when he joined and was gutted to learn he wasn’t staying. My big Sisters ex boyfriends dad was the club photographer at the time and told me he’d cleared his locker out. I was totally devastated). We’ve had a habit of signing South American players and not playing them. Zuniga would have been good, I thought but was let go.

Zuniga and Aloisi might have done a good job when we first went down but we signed Hughes instead. Hindsight eh.

Roger van Gool and Rudi Kaiser – both signed from the continent as direct wingers who would set the First Division on fire.

As I recall, Roger was underwhelming, and Ruud was exciting for a short while before getting injured and leaving. Late 70s / early 80s - it was much harder in those days for foreign players to fit in to the English football culture.

Two of the coolest names ever though!

Brilliant isn't it?
How on earth Peacock-Farrell hasn't seen Bonne behind him or, more to the point, one of his teammates pointed out is incredible.

I like it because the goalie took ages wasting time, people online were saying not very sporting nor is holding the ball for ages.

I have just watched the Sheff Wed v Bolton match, what an awful spectacle. 20 goals Bakayoko came on at 72 minutes and touched the ball once.

Normal service resumed then?

Disclaimer - I have no idea how he’s been getting on after scoring on or near his debut. I’m guessing he’s gone quiet, not been affecting games and is now a (not very impactful) impact sub.

I think he was injured for a while, so it might have been his first game back? he came on and was played upfront, I believe he was played on the wing at the start of the season, probably a better position for him.

He scored 2 from the bench against Liverpool’s kids midweek
