Oh and we finished top 10 in the top flight 7 times (I think). And what size is that ? How many times have Norwich, Southampton, Birmingham or Stoke been this far in comparison ?
As fans we like to big ourselves up. But we weren't that good or that big. We struggled for decades in the top flight, breaking into the top 10 once, I think. Says something that we go out in the 3rd Round against non-league opposition more times than I'd like. Success in the past couple of seasons isn't a reflection of where we were, pre SiSu.
Plus, on the entertainment side, getting this far makes it more enjoyable for the fanbase, achieving something we haven't conquered that frequently.
Is about par then on top flight years.Norwich 6
Birmingham 19
Stoke 16
Southampton 21
Leicester 18
Nothing to do with 'bigging us up'. For a medium/large-ish club 6 is a pretty low number for 140-odd years, as is Norwich's.
7 in total, my adding up was crap earlier and thought 6.The 1/4 finals I remember were
West Brom 82
Sheff Wed 87
Sheff Utd 97
Chelsea 09
And before my time Man U 63
Are there anymore
Not counting my chickens as we've got a lot of hard work to do to get there
Yes just seen someone mention Wolves in 73, who did we play in 1910?7 in total, my adding up was crap earlier and thought 6.
The list is 1909/10, 62/63, 72/73, 81/82, 86/87 (the one I missed), 97/98, 2008/09.
Not really.
I also recall watching Lampard and Ballack be a million miles in front of Doyle and Gunarsson. Both were getting on but their speed of thought was on another level.Drogba was an absolute beast that day (he was most days tbf). He bullied the both of them
3 wins in stripes 2 defeats not in stripesBeen to all 5 Wembley games. Got an opportunity for 4 more this year (FA cup semi final, final, play off final and charity shield)
We also had nearly 50 seasons not finishing in the top 6. What other club could beat us at that?In 140 years we've only ever reached this far on 7 occasions. That seems really low for a club of this size especially when you consider you only need 3 wins to get there if you are playing in the top two leagues.
Can anybody on here lay claim to having attended all of the last 6 of these (the first one was 1909/10!)?
We won't get a much better chance than this season of making it 8.

I love questions.Not really.
Birmingham 19 QFs or better (57 years in top flight) 1 QF for every 3 years of top flight
Stoke 16 (62) About 1 in 4
Leicester 18 (55) About 1 in 3
Southampton 21 (46) About 1 in 2
Coventry 7 (34) 1 in 5
Any more questions?

Why is it called ‘shipping’ if it goes by lorry? Why is it called ‘cargo’ when it goes by ship?
Can blind people see their dreams?
- The words have origins in different languages, so that English has applied meanings to them which don't necessarily correlate with their memes.
- "Cargo" derives from a Spanish word meaning "load" which was derived from the Latin "carrus" a wheeled vehicle, which survives in English as "cart."
- "Shipment" derives from the Old English word "scip" pronounced the same as modern "ship" and having cognate forms in other Germanic languages. The historical usage of "shipment" was to indicate the totality of cargo being transported at one time, whether on multiple wagons or multiple ships.
I suppose over our history, we only became a major club in the mid 60’s, contrasting with West Brom who had won the FA Cup 3 times by 1931, having won the league twice in 1920 and 21. Other clubs have similar heritages, the North West giants of the first half of the 20th Century come to mind, and Wolves, Villa etc. etc. So 7 in say 60 years is probably not so bad, although I agree that the way we’ve approached some cup campaigns over the past few years has been disappointing, and we could/should have been better. It crazy, especially when you look at a club like West Brom who have played in 10 FA Cup finals.
Our chance of becoming a major club disappeared when Hill resigned it really dropped us in the shit, he bought no players in the summer and his resignation sent us into the big league rudder less.I suppose over our history, we only became a major club in the mid 60’s, contrasting with West Brom who had won the FA Cup 3 times by 1931, having won the league twice in 1920 and 21. The Sheffield Utd one was an upsetting one.
From memory... after the Man U game, our performances away from home were superb (Liverpool, Bolton, Villa, Southampton, Palace). Just couldn't finish... Sadly Dave Holdsworth could!
