Consistency:
2020/21 was a mixed first season in the championship for Fankaty Dabo. Going into 2021/22 he was first choice right back ahead of Julian DaCosta. However, starting at rcb against Nottingham Forest was not the start he would have wanted or needed.
Over the course of the season Dabo has played RWB, LWB and RCB and alternated seemingly every game between November and December before injury struck. Transfermarkt has Dabo featuring RWB on 19 occasions with 8 appearances out of position which I’m sure does not include positional switches during the game such as Bristol City (h). He has also missed games through suspension, injury and has only featured in 56% of our league minutes this season. This has no doubt affected his consistency and I have no doubt he would have produced better performances had he been able to play reguarly in his preferred position.
After making his first appearance in September, Kane has also had his injury troubles and recently has found himself on the bench behind Josh Eccles. However, according to transfermrkt, he has only featured out of position once.
Attacking stats:
Dabo’s stats are poor with only 2 assists and 0 goals across the season and has come into criticism for his crossing.
In my opinion Dabo links better with Hamer, O’hare and the forwards than Todd Kane does however, this is not indicated heavily in the stats I have seen. Although Dabo has attempted 728 short passes in comparison to Kane’s 656, his passing accuracy is only 1% better than Todd Kane’s. Purely from the eye test, I would still suggest Dabo has the edge here.
Kane has contributed 5 assists and a slightly fortuitous goal. It is clear that throughout the game, Kane finds himself in far better positions to cross the ball, although his crossing can be erratic at times. I would argue he is far more likely to create a goal from a cross than Dabo is.
According to Squawka, Kane has attempted 255 crosses of which 65 were successful with Dabo only attempting 108 of which 22 were successful. I must caveat this includes corners which of course Kane takes occasionally.
Defensive stats:
I think the above shows what we all suspected. Dabo is stronger in the tackle and has a greater duel success. Kane on the other hand is more prone to standing off and attempting to block crosses. He is also more likely to play safe rather than play out of defence.
Discipline is a factor here. Even in league one Dabo was prone to diving in to a tackle. He gave away a clumsy penalty this year in the first game of the season and was also sent off for a rash tackle against Cardiff. He is a far more aggressive defender than Kane has shown us so far.
So in light of these stats and their performances throughout the season, who would you want as our first choice RWB next season:
A) Fankaty Dabo
B) Todd Kane
C) Josh Eccles
D) A new signing (suggestions welcome)
