The late, great Ernie Machin deserves a mention here.

Not the most gifted, but a real workhorse who gave everything he had, every game.

Played a huge part in getting us into the top division and keeping us there during the early years.

Loved the club until he passed away a couple of years ago.

Ndlovu and Nilsson are the best I've seen. Hadji, Chippo, Dublin, Keane, Babb, Whelan, Huckerby, Oggy, Froggatt, Macca, Boateng, Borrows and Quinn all deserve a mention too. Aside from the odd blip (Wilson, Warnock and Henderson) sadly I can not think of any single player we've had since PL relegation that is fit to lace the boots of any of these.

Fortunate enough to have seen Tommy Hutch from when I first started going to HR mid seventies up until his departure in 1980. Great tho he was I was probs to young to class him as my all time favourite. From an adult perspective, for me it's Brian Borrows. His loyalty and service to the club is up there with the best. A solid, reliable defender, Scored a few cracking goals when he went forward, so unlucky to miss what would have been his career highlight. We wouldn't have made it all the way without his contribution. And er, I played most of my Sunday football in his position.

I know this has been mentioned a thousand times but I was there when Megson crocked him. Cold, snowing, orange ball. He was a phenomenal player before the injury.

Difficult to think of many PL goals better than his strike at Anfield

Bizarrely the first 2 players that came to my mind aswell...Bugsy was hugely underated and hugely unlucky to get injured just before the cup final.

George Curtis, Ian Gibson, Ronnie Rees and George Hudson. If I was forced to choose between them, I'd have to go with Hudson though. Ah, those were the days.

Hadji was technically better and had more flair but I always preferred watching Chippo and felt he had more of an impact.

Blimey those days of being dubbed "the entertainers" by Sky seem like a long time ago now.

Crazy to think we didn't even win an away game with that side!

The likes of Hutchison and Dublin will always come out on top of these types of threads - and rightly so - their quality and commitment shone through.

One player I did think of rarely gets a mention. A player who played in a pretty awful side in the top flight and yet managed to be top scorer 3 seasons running and ending up with around 50 goals in 100 games. Goals that ensured survival.

Terry Gibson - underrated and overlooked but has a record that many aspired to and failed to achieve.

I always liked Terry Yorath. Always gave 100%. Hard as nails and a natural leader and uncompromising tackler - not many went past him, and those that did were addressed later in the game!

Tommy Hutchinson, had great skill and gave us great service. Then went on to play at Manchester City, ended up at Swansea still playing at the age of 40...a great professional

Before my time but worthy of a mention George Mason. Manchester United tried to sign him but he stayed loyal to Coventry. An imposing CB, the George Curtis before George Curtis.

Too many to name Tommy Hutchinson, willie Carr and Ernie Hunt my favs. Always a soft spot for Curtis as he was my dads fav but he broke his leg second season I was a regular.

Yes Ernie Machin an unsung hero. Not the prettiest or best we have had but like Curtis, Bruck and others from that promotion team a player who gave his all every game...and Jimmy Hill got the best out of them

Alas, despite the user name, it. Isn't Jarni! Speedie for me. He was Dennis Wise and more. His was one of those rare players who just had that 6th sense. I'll never forget him playing a pass to Gladys (who he know was not ready for it) and berating him for not making the run. He made it 5 minutes later, and crossed onto Speedos head for a goal! Enfant Terrible! Legend! Lock up your wives!

On his debut as a teenage sub, he put the hard as nails Burnley (also Villa) centre forward Andy Lockhead sprawling into the Leeds dug out. Lockhead said to the Leeds bench "who the fucking hell is that kid."

the he great thing about Yorath at Cov was he could get everyone to raise their game even when he was having an absolute mare. A true leader.

Ndlovu was brilliant as well, £10k well spent! Shame about the injuries. Strachan for whatever reason didn't fancy him.
