none of those mentioned were in the class of Brian Clough

Took a poor championship club to double European Champions

It would be like somebody taking over at Ipswich now - and within 3-4 years winning the premiership, and the champions league twice (that was whan you had to be champions to enter it)

Clough was good....but not as good as Ferguson.....the facts & stats speak for themselves.

Cloughs 2 titles were his only 2....Derby & Forest....and 2 european cups (1 of which they won as champions & 1 as defending the cup....by beating that footballing giant, Malmo)

Clough couldn't handle a big club (Leeds) & also failed at Forest & got them relegated.

Fergie was sucesful at St Mirren, then smashed the Old Firm monopoly with 3 titles & european success at Aberdeen......and then has wiped the board in the English top division.....more titles & cups than any other manager ever.....

Clough was good.....but not even in the same league my friend. Ferguson is the best manager English football has ever seen....FACT.

Chief Commentator!
Always hated the man. Arrogant and a complete ad utter moron IMO. But there's no doubting he had his qualities. And the three I mentioned probably were qualities that worked in his favour.

Hope Moyes isn't the next manager of united. He's got it good at Everton, well everything apart from a new contract! Everton will really suffer if he goes, especially if there's no compo as I'm sure he's out of contract.

Tough boots to fill mind!

Following the news that Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring at the end of the season, Wrigleys chewing gum have announced they have entered administration.

Why all the negative comments about Moyes? He has proven he is a very good manager with little budget to work with at Everton. He deserves a chance at one of the worlds elite clubs.

I don't get it either. I don't think they'll be as good but I can't see Moyes getting them relegated!

If Moyes to United then Martinez to Everton????

They could do a lot worse.

I don't rate Martinez. If struggling in the bottom 4 EVERY season constitutes being a good manager then football has gone mad. He is also tactically lacking, anyone who watches the way Wigan defend would probably agree! Before anyone says it I know they are in the FA Cup final but that competition means very little nowadays

You may be right Prodoc.

Interesting quote that he felt he should leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape ,wonder if he knows there are pitfalls ahead with the leveraged debt against the business??

I would'nt say the team, although winning the PL easily this year has been one of his strongest ,more that the two or three contenders have been inadequately managed for reasons best known to their owners or in Mancinis case himself.

They certainly could'nt cope in Europe this season with the lack of quality throughout his squad.:thinking about:

Fergie a top manager and will be sorely missed by the league. Did a lot of England team also which the other top 3 or 4 clubs cannot say. I think the right chouce should be Moyes and maybe take a Neville with him as his number 2 but I wonder how patient utd will be this time if it isn't go so well??!

They defended the cup by beating hamburg did'nt they?
I thought the year forest beat malmo, they knocked out the european cup holders liverpool and german champions cologne. I remember the malmo game well. I supported them that night because of their colours.:D

I don't see how a European Cup should be discredited because Malmo were the losing finallist, unless they won the place in the final in a raffle or by collecting tokens.

Without Martinez, Wigan would've been relegated years ago, he's kept them up and worked with the financial constraints extremely well, he built Swansea's foundations, and I think if he stayed, he would have took them to the PL anyway, a top manager with lots of potential, I hope he goes to Everton.

Bit of a shame he never came up against his son in a competative match.

Ahh well, at least his last match against Coventry ended in defeat :)

Sky Sports still saying Moyes to get the job. Seems more like a press appointment if true.

Ah well, it'll be fun watching the rats flee the ship.

I disagree, I believe Ferguson will have had his say on who he wants to succeed him, in that case, Moyes gets it every time, I like Everton, my 2nd team because of Moyes (First PL game was Everton last season!) but I think he's wasted at Everton, if Everton had money, he'd get top 4 consistently, has similar style to Fergie as well, very logical.

Klopp doesn't want to manage in the PL anymore, why would he? The Bundesliga has overtook PL and possibly La Liga, as for Mourinho, if he leaves Madrid, it's gotta be Chelsea, he's got unfinished business there. Martinez to Everton, Martinez I rate very highly, who could become a top manager.

Would you believe Moyes' only trophy is Division 2 title!?

This is going to sound odd, but I think Moyes is a great manager at Everton. But thats the key. At Everton. He's built a good off and on pitch team. I do wonder how he'd cope away from all that at Man u.

I have a feeling it'll be like Hodgson at Liverpool, the job is too big for him.

A very valid question, we won't know until it happens, if it happens. I personally think he'll be very successful, if he brings in Fellaini and Baines, that's a good start, but I think Man U will suffer from shells hock the first season or 2 after Ferguson leaves, the man has been manager of Man U all of my lifetime (33% longer actually) and my generation don't know football without Ferguson, I don't hint there's anyone better than the great man himself.

I think Moyes + cash = success, Man U can give Moyes the opportunity show everyone what he's really got.

Well they managed to maintain there premier league status for 4 seasons before the messiah Martinez took charge. In 3 of those 4 seasons they also finished higher than Martinez has ever managed to take them.

His not a bad manager but I do think he is overrated, teams could do worse than appointing Martinez but they could also do better.
