Surprised to see some say they'd be happy with a draw. If we're serious about automatic promotion we have to be looking to win every game we play. This is the stage of the season where a couple of teams always emerge, go on crazy runs and roll over teams. It happens every season. A draw isn't the end of the world, but you can't be happy with it either.

People seem to have convinced themselves that this season will be different, but I'm not sure it will be. Go back over recent seasons, and the fewest amount of games won over a 46 game season for automatic promotion is 25. I think we probably need to win 12-13 games out of the remaining 19, that's a win ratio far better than what we have achieved so far this season. If we don't do that, someone else will, the table doesn't differ all that much at the end of every season.

We have to start winning games week in week out.

What makes you think someone else will take this league by the scruff of the neck? No-one has shown any indication of doing so far.
Our points per game ratio is the highest in the league, (just). I can't see how 2 points per game for the rest of the season won't get autos this year when so far we are averaging 1.8 and top of the league Ipswich averaging 1.777.

Which is what I said, 2 points per game is 82 points which I think it was we need, so about 12 wins from 19 plus a couple of draws, or 10 wins and 8 draws, but no matter how you break it down it's a tough task.

What makes me think a couple if teams will emerge is that it always happens. Out of the top 8, a couple of teams will go on long winning/unbeaten runs, but no reason why that cannot be us. The point being that if we simply match our ppg so far we will not go up.

If every team matches their ppg won’t they end up in the same order?

it does, and I've been saying it will happen for a couple of months, but, as with most of my predictions, it hasn't and I'm not sure it will which is why I feel this season is an anomaly.
This time last year the top 5 had all broke the 50 point barrier and we were sitting where Fleetwood are now in 11th but we were 15 points behind 4th place, if you go through previous years it's a similar picture but this year Fleetwood in 11th are only they are only 6 points behind us in 4th.
There's more to the unusual make up of this years league than just the Bury factor.

I know we're very much a different outfit to back then and this was when the formation changed, but surprised with how confident some are RE a win, when we were unbelievably lucky to scrape a 2-1 in the home fixture. Fleetwood should have been about 4 or possibly 5 up at half time. One of their chipped efforts was almost like they were taking the piss it was that easy for them in the first half. A result here, be it a win or a draw, is a good result.
I don't think we were that lucky. Robins made double substitution at half time and changed the game.

But that will not happen. No way we'll go up with 77 points imo. Go back over the last few years and the teams that go up will all have kicked on.

Last year on Jan 20th the ppg for the teams that finished top 3

Luton 2
Barnsley 1.92
Charlton 1.82

From that point to the end of the season
Luton 2
Barnsley 2.05
Charlton 2.05

It happens every year, the odd exception being teams that have a flying first half of the season. If people think we can trundle along with the same ppg ratio and go up they are kidding themselves. I think 2 ppg will just about do it. We're at 1.76 at the moment.

you are correct, 1.76, I said 1.8 earlier, but we are still higher than everyone apart from Ipswich.
it was clear last year that the Luton and Barnsley were a cut above, I don't see that in anyone this season.

Every season is different and unlike last season nobody’s running away with it. I suppose the question is which sides are going to improve and which will fall away. I think Sunderland will continue to improve, Wycombe will continue to fall off and as for ourselves we have all of our neighbours at home except Ipswich.

Sunderland have Pompey away and a couple of other tricky ones over the next half dozen games. A positive for us (theoretically) is that most of our remaining games (bar Ipswich and tonight) are at home against the other challengers.

O’Hare to start over Westbrooke for me
I think we’ll be surprised tonight

Can see Biamou starting and Baka getting some game time

Can see Pask and Mason getting a start too and have no idea about the midfield but you’ve got to think Allen and Ohare are likely to start.

Quite excited to see what he does

If we get a good haul from those games we deserve to go up and if we don’t we don’t. Simple

Start the team that finished the game Saturday then maybe give the wing backs a rest Saturday at Bristol , anyone know when ticket details for the replay will be released ?

Looking at the games on tonight, 3 points is essential.

We just need to focus on ourselves and picking up points, we will eventually surface to the top as teams around us are playing each other.

Avoiding defeat is the priority. The next two away games after this look comfortable. Bristol clearly have issues with their management and Southend just have issues

Nothing is essential at this point, a draw is fine

Wonder if O'Hare really was fit on Saturday
I understand he didn't train Friday and had a fitness test before the game
Naturally he didn't want to miss such a big match especially with his Villa background but players aren't always honest about whether they are really fit to play

Last year Sunderland had the fewest defeats in the league - 5. Missed out on autos as they had the most number of draws - 19. We need wins!
