Used to play snooker in there every Friday night until the guy who owned it took the table out to put in a dining area that hardly ever got used.

Been gradually going down hill since the football club left Highfield Road, took a lot of match day revenue away. I know my grandad said in the end they were getting so few in they some days they were closing early because there was no point staying open.

In a very odd area now HR is knocked down, right past the Mosque!

I just wonder about these things, who gains from fans's generosity and support. The rebuilt Main Stand at Highfield Road was built with donations (at least, contributions), all to someone's private pocket even as scrap.

How I wish it the ground still existed and we were still there. Shame on the lot of them for selling us out.

I played Sunday football for the Supporters Club, first when it was based under the Sky Blue Stand in Thackall Street and then when it moved to Freehold Street. After games on a Sunday (home games on a lovely pitch at Shilton) and after training on a Thursday most players would go back to the club. Both days the club would be busy. This was late 70s early 80s.
On one occasion when Bobby Gould was the manager, he got a copy of the 4-0 win over Liverpool and brought it to the club so the Supporters Club team and anyone else in the club could watch the whole game. Pre Internet days so a real treat.

Look's like a typical Coventry working men's club or social club. Most of these being lost to history now. WMPTE, Coventry Evening Telegraph etc.

Gone but not forgotten.

Learned and played chess in these places growing up as so did many former councillors, and dare I say it, MPs.

The WM club at Eastern Green was simply rammed every weekends (and probably most weekdays as I recall), packed to the rafters with those that worked in the Banner Lane factories, not least Massey Ferguson and Wickmans. You couldn't see from one end to the other, though that was because of the blue smoke!

Makes me sad, the way decent industries have gone, and that sense of community.

I don't think the love carried on to the next generations though. Fuck you Starbucks.

Only ever visited the place to attend monthly League meetings, acting as 'secretary' of our Sunday league team.
Oh, that and for a 'Gentleman's evening' in the late '90's.

Yes I loved them too.
Worked at the Coachmakers Makers in the early 80s it has just been knocked down and a massive medical centre is rising from its ashes.

There is still a number that can remember the backroom upstairs of the Coventry Evening Telegraph social club on a Tuesday night.

The chess club is apparently over here now. I guess it depends when restrictions are lifted.

Yes I played there a few times.
Used to work with John Evan's who ran the chess club, around 82, 83.

We got a hold of the old league trophy a few years ago, amazing some of the teams on there. Bell Green of all places had a few league winning sides, imagine walking round there with a board and set now

Thanks to Warwick Uni and their conveyor belt of master strength behemoths I think my chances of a winners' medal are slim! Can't play as much in the league as I once did anyway.

Selling HR worst decision the club's ever made!
Didn't realise the supporters club was still there.
