Mark Robins believes Gervane Kastaneer can be a real “weapon” for Coventry City this season.
The Sky Blues boss is desperately trying to get the Dutch winger up to speed to make the sort of impact that had fans on the edge of their seats in Saturday’s grandstand finish at St Andrew’s when he fired the team to life and almost sparked a stoppage time winner.
“He lit the blue touchpaper and that’s what he’s got,” enthused Robins, who has been excited and frustrated by the 22-year-old in equal measure so far this season.
Currently being used as an impact player from the bench, the summer signing from NAC Breda announced his arrival with a goal within 60 seconds of his 81st minute League One debut against Bristol Rovers to secure a 2-0 victory in early August.

He blotted his copybook in the following game, however, when he was sent off for two yellow card offences against Portsmouth – an incredible match in which City still managed to level the scores to 3-3 with ten men.
And then he flattered to deceive in his first start for the club in the 3-0 EFL Cup defeat at Premier League Watford, since when he’s been used sparingly as a late substitute.
“We have got to try to get him 45 minutes and then up to an hour and then it gives us a real weapon because he’s an outstanding talent.
“He’s someone who has come across here to this country. He’s only a young man but he’s come over from Holland, been in Germany and he has come here and it’s a different type of football for him.
“He’s just finding his feet but if he performs like that he’s electric.”

So what’s the secret to getting 90 mins out of him?
“It’s just work, it’s no secret,” he said.
“He just has to work hard. His fitness levels have got to come up and he’s got to be...um...
“I have been working him out.
“He’s a really good lad. He’s powerful and he’s still only 22 and still a baby really.
“He’s come over and he’s got family and all those things that you have to try to be without; different friends and that type of thing in a new environment.
“So he’s had to start again really and he’s done really well. But he just has to keep working and then he will get himself to a level where he can start a game because, clearly, he is unbelievable!”

The sub appearance on sat was unreal. As someone who missed the game, read the reviews and then watched it for the first time back last night, i could not believe how electric he was. MRs biggest task is to harness that talent somehow into a 75 min plus player

Yeah I have to admit I don’t watch them live but when that game was being streamed online I saw it and the pace of the game was virtually walking football. You must be right, Robins must think there’s little value in sticking him in for fitness
I really rate this fella I liked the look of him in his few sub appearances even his 20 or so minutes v Portsmouth he showed a trick that told me we have a player here was just short of match fitness. Want to see him run at defences big Cyrillie style I’m sure that’s in his locker

I wouldn't want to hype him up too much and create undue pressure. His touch looked heavy to me on Saturday (match practice?).
Hopefully in 5 games time we can assess him fairly then.
Jobello looks decent to me. With a bit of confidence he could be very effective. Decent crosser of ball at this level.

Definitely something we need to work on. The front 3 need to narrow as soon as we get 20 yards from their goal. Not suggesting the two are comparable in terms of quality, but that’s what Pep’s Barca team used to concentrate on. Structure became a lot more fluid in the final third.

Anything with 2 men in the box mate if we have a wide player who’s looking to cross early,I’m not suggesting changing the system I think we need more from Jobello if not Kastanner replacing him.

433 should have at least two in the box. When it’s on the left it should be Jobello and on the right it should be Hiwula. Playing two out and out strikers in 433 would just hamper one side IMo

I really like him, he is raw still, will make mistakes and maybe be a but rash but clearly has a lot of talent, pace and strength and skill. We often see players who will have a game pass them by and do nothing of note, now Kastaneer, barring the watford game, had had an impact in every game and has been involved in a big chance coming our way whether it be him setting it up or him having the chance and realistically, despite how many minutes he has played this season, he could and perhaps should have 3 goals to his name already and a couple of assists, so he certainly is involved and the more time he gets the more he will be able to get involved.
The thought of him getting to a place to be a starter as well as Jones coming back is incredibly exciting!

Not sure I’m as excited as some after his cameo on Saturday; his touch was off and he doesn’t look technically brilliant, plus his positional sense wasn’t fantastic.
However as he grew into the game and got on the ball more he turned into the player we all thought we’d signed. His direct running and pace were welcome additions and if he can do more he’ll be a real standout player for us.
Assuming he can do that, I agree he should replace Jobello, but he won’t mitigate all of his weaknesses. Jobello is a winger as opposed to an inside forward and Kasteener is the same style of player, albeit he has the potential to be better at it. I also don’t think he’ll necessarily fit the free flowing passing and intricate football we play, but if he can offer an effective outlet then we can work around it.
I also think part of the issue is his fitness and enthusiasm to please, so perhaps once he’s match fit and calmed down, his technical ability will also improve.

Didn’t look great today (again) but I’ll give the benefit of the doubt as surely any player needs a run in the team to develop... but based on what I’ve seen he doesn’t look a footballer.
I said this when we signed him and got shouted down.
