Goalkeeper Next Season (1 Viewer)

Robins comments from last night and him getting the full game make it seem as if Robins might be considering having O'Brien as the starting keeper next season.

Seemed to be full of praise for him.

He made some good stops, penalty save but there was that moment the ball took a huge bobble over his foot!

Id be surprised. Burge should be no.1 unless hes leaving? I think hes out of cotnract end of season?

It might mean, to the disappointment of some, that none of the stated "three signings" will be a new keeper. Maybe he is happy with Burge as number 1 and O'Brien as a better than average number 2

Standard management. Let him play in a 'big' friendly and give him loads of praise so that he feels a bit more content with having to sit on the bench for the season.

Was reasonably impressed with him last night. Certainly better than I recall. Pitch was awful though, could see it bobbling and bouncing unevenly throughout. Suppose we need to get used to it with our landlords.

O'Brien is a good keeper
Catches well, can throw it over the half way line and kick it to the other penalty area
He's a good shot stopper too
His problem is that he loses concentration and makes silly rickets which result in comedy goals
Without them he'd be playing at a higher level

There isn’t much between them. The last performance I can recall seeing from O’Brien, was at Crewe away when Burge sat out because of a runny nose. He proved more than capable that day.

Saying that, I’d still like a better number one than the pair of them. Those that keep saying ‘Burge is fine for League 1’ obviously don’t remember Burge during his last season in League 1. We were relegated.

A few decent games here and there at the back end of last season appear to have hoodwinked some people into thinking he is quality. ‘His better years are ahead of him’, ‘still young for a goalkeeper’ are another 2 phrases which are often banded around which are a load of nonsense. Yes he improved but he is still far too prone to errors and that was in the league below. We are a McNulty replacement and a new number one of being a real force in league one in my opinion.

I've said it before, but as much as i agree that Burge isnt the greatest, towards the end of last season, particularly in the big pressure cooker matches he was brilliant! If he could make that form consistent then for this level he will be absolutely fine.

I seem to recall the O'Brien signing being received with praise at the time, and its unfortunate for him that as a number 2 he will have limited games and in some of those games hes made some mistakes which then stick in the memory!

If we had an old "Christ Kirkland" type keeper come in, and they made similar mistakes to our two keeps everyone would be jumping around saying we need a young a hungry keeper. Its just one of those circular debates!

getting a new goalkeeper is the least of our worries.

Obrien had a good game last night, his shot stopping was good, but is still not as good as Burge and will remain a decent back up, he has way to many errors in him still, the bobble over his foot and the miscommunication in the first half were poor and would be punished in a competitive game i think.

Burge is a decent first choice keeper, yes he isnt perfect, but it is league 1, he is fine for this league and has a lot more game time and experience now than when we was last in this league and will be fine.

I think the bobble over his foot was more the pitch wasn't it?

That's a coincidence isn't it which adds fuel to my point I was making in the Nicky Ajose thread which i copy below;
My very reliable source who never lets me down reckons we are in advanced talks with Lev Yashin to be back up to Burge this season.
He is adamant goalies improve with age so he should be shit hot.
If he's dead I apologise to all his loved ones

Wasn't that said last season?

some of his mistakes and lapses in concentration were not good enough, Robins must have a lot of patience. Would you happy for it to continue again next season?

If you think he is good enough for a team challenging to get out of League 1 then fair play to you but I don't see it myself

I think in the run in and play offs he was one of our key players. I think he can do a good job in this league.

Unfortunately some fans just won't move on from his early mistakes. Also he has been unfairly blamed for some goals conceded when the real fault was defenders or midfield.

I think he has shown a lot of character and has developed. He needs to kick on now and have full confidence in himself.

For "needs to kick on" read "Needs to learn how to kick". It is infuriating that so many end up in the stands. Otherwise I like Burge. The goalkeepers in Div 2 were rubbish and he was better than most if not all)

Stick with Burgey, he will develop into a top keeper (eventually)

Andy lonergan is available, always used to be decent champ goalie. Wonder if robins would actually try to spend money on one? Id be surprised if he was.

Ive always said Burge is a good keeper and still stick by that, people seem to think hes full of mistakes all the time. The only series of mistakes i can remember a keeper making last year was LOB.. Burge drops the odd catch (like any keeper even in the prem) but shot stopping wise he is id say better than average ie (reading body language of a forward etc) if he had brilliant distribution and handling to go with his shot stopping he wouldnt be with us. I think we have more pressing positions to fill than constantly being on Burges back. Anyone would be nervous coming for catches when you have 10k hone fans cheering when you catch one.

Forest Green at home he spilled a nothing shot into the net and we lost 1-0. Exeter he came charging out of his goal like a mad man, got nowhere near the ball and then eventually sliced a clearance 10 yards to their forward, lost 1-0. LOBs 2 were Newport and Yeovil, lost 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

I'd have loved to see Kirkland back. Has his depression under control, only 37 and could have been the long term replacement as GK coach even if he was coaching the youth to start with.
