There's a famous old story about Bill Shankly and his then soon to be wife.

She was apparently trying to arrange a wedding date, but knew she couldn't book it for when there was a match on.

So, she finally found something and said she had a date and it was fine, because she checked all the fixtures and Liverpool weren't playing that day and neither were Everton.

He replied with something along the lines of "but that's no good either, Tranmere Rovers have a game on."
Lovely story but shankly was married during the war. He joined Liverpool in 59

I heard that story from somewhere and I am sure it was Shankly I heard say it. Maybe I am misremembering and it was an anniversary then.

Or his daughter's wedding.

I didn't dream it, I promise. 😁

My parents were married in 1967. My grandfather wasnt seen leaving the Church service halfway through, even though he was father of the bride. His absence was only noted when the photos were being taken later. His absence was confirmed at the wedding breakfast later. At which point, a number of City fans were identified as absent or clutching radios.

Just seen Haji's old club have a been handed a transfer ban for unpaid debts to players. Meaning they can't register new signings.

If they are desperate could be a good chance to see if we could cash in any future fees for Haji early at a cut price or buy the sell-on clause back similar to what Sporting did?! Obviously would be a short term loss but could pay off big time later down the line

The mistakes and poor play were there alright in the early games, which got some people's knickers in a twist and it blinded them to the talents that were obvious to everyone else.

It's often the way on here - look at how people have overlooked some of Torp's great play the other night, just because he didn't do the greatest job trying to cover the right back position and it led to a goal.

sorry, just to clear this up, if you watch it back the run wasn’t tracked by Eccles, and that left Torp with two men as the ball was played past him - that’s why he pointed and questioned the marking before trying to make up the distance as Eccles just stood around.

yes there was a lack of pace, but the guy was already yards past him and he also had to turn and chase as he was already going towards his man to close the ball down

Your obsession with Eccles makes me chuckle 😂

You seem to make more posts about him than all of our other players combined!

I've just taken his opinion at face value, I'm just interested,is he wrong in this instance tbf, does Eccles do what he says or not?

Eccles is a good player, with the potential to be a lot better. What is unclear is whether the shackles it appears he sometimes plays with are self imposed or on instruction from MR, but he does come across as a particularly unselfish player with a real team ethos. If we were to sell him I have no doubt that there would be lots of interest from our Championship rivals. It maybe at somepoint for the betterment of his career that he does move on, although I think that would be a shame.

Some of our fans however only pick up on misplaced passes or errors he makes in matches which all players make in truth, while conveniently ignoring those similar errors made by our other players, so as to suit their anti Eccles agenda. Likewise when he does something good in a match it is ignored, while stats showing he is actually an accurate passer are also conveniently dismissed.

Yes but in this actual case?
Can it be interpreted this way just trying to find out, I agree with all of your post…

I am certainly not a big Eccles fan but at some points I say wow well done which is usually followed up by saying fucking hell when he passes straight back to the opposition, the majority of times he is passing back and not even looking for a forward pass but he is a decent tackler and I will always say he has had a good game

Utter nonsense. Has double the amount of Forward Passes as Backward & has created the most amount of open play chances in the team.

well I agree with this, but it’s the same point Calista was making re Torp, which I was trying to prove by pointing out there’s always an agenda, and it wasn’t actually his fault even though he got the blame

Yet he found exceptional balls 20-30 yards on at least 3 out of four occasions on Tuesday right through the lines, I just want to know if was guilty of what was suggested around Torp tbf?
that’s Josh Eccles marking the ref - Torp is pressing the ball, and the guy making the run appears to be Eccles’ man (who runs on and puts the ball in, and who Torp was criticised for not keeping up with / tracking)
Thanks a bit dubious but only due to my eyesight!! Confirmed!

Why have you screenshotted it there I wonder...? 🙄

He clearly runs back at picks up the No.7 Placheta who was otherwise wide open for a cut back.

The chance came from Torp losing the ball, MvE & Sakamoto both being caught up field & Torp unable to recover. To blame Eccles is ludicrous.

At least post the video so people can make up their own minds.

fair - and people can make up their own minds, I screenshotted there because that was where it was obvious Torp pressed the ball and Eccles was in no man’s land

he eventually marked a man, but (in my opinion) if you watch his movement before that he stands around and then ambles back for a bit not picking anyone up, and if he had tracked the run the cross may have been prevented / delayed

all my opinion, but I’m also right, so 🖕🏼

One of Shankly's best quotes.
"I wasn't lucky enough to have an education, so I had to use my brains instead"
And if Everton were playing in his garden he'd shut the curtains.

In relation to Torp's mishap against Oxford in that first game, I noticed in the most recent game against the same opposition he was beaten in midfield and just brought the player down. He's learnt.

Interesting, observed the same. he made another couple of duals into a physical coming together also rather than let someone run off.

Good to see if he has learnt.

My gut feeling following Sheaf’s brief 20m cameo, is that both Torp and Eccles will play better alongside him. On the games so far, midfield looks like our weakest position without Sheaf. Which is a potential concern because it would mean neither our 2nd or 3rd choice CM (at the time of writing) is capable of ‘owning’ that midfield area. Therefore, if we intend to progress further, both Torp nor Eccles would be incapable of being a reliable starter in a top 3 Championship team, let alone the Prem if we got there.

I’ll reiterate this is my gut feeling and could be well off the mark. If I’m being consistent, it’s a bit too early to tell and it could be both Torp and Eccles starting the season slowly.

I will admit I am a n Eccles fan.
We can argue over the starting point, but I think we would have to agree he has improved each season.
Yes he looks better with Sheaf next to him,who wouldn’t?
He works hard, tackles hard and makes a lot more forward passes than he gets credit for.
Let’s not forget that he is still a young player. Cut him some slack and give him a bit more support.

As I say I will applaud when he does well and you're entitled to your views as I am and I don't rate him
