Hamer and club legends (2 Viewers)

Was having a chat on FB on the fans forum, and was saying He will go in the summer without question but if he keeps us up and we get a decent fee then its a brilliant piece of business for the future of the club. As much as we want him to stay he is a level above and needs to progress quickly. Football is a 15 year career for these guys.

A mate of mine pointed out that unless you're top 4 prem, you're buying for profit.

People then get upset that we are labled a "selling club"

I was saying the other day about how our record scorer, Clarrie Bourton will never be beaten. Players far more nomadic these days because of the cash.

What will constitute a club legend for teams of our stature these days? Length of service or what they achieve whilst here?

Mixture of both.

I can't see how you can be a club legend if you only stay one season with a club.

Agreed. So what defines a legend?

Tough one.

Personally I have more 'affection' towards Speedie, Gallacher, Dublin & Huckerby over Keane, who was here for one season.

But then, look at Kante & Leicester... He was there for one season, and I am sure he has legendary status.

Good point about Keane. Example of someone who achieved a lot in a small space of time

And our moronic fans booed Dublin, who kept us in the Premier League for a number of seasons (and stayed here a lot longer than Kante at Leicester)

I was there. There was no nuance to it... it was simply because he went to Villa.

(Which was an absolute heartbreak and kick in the teeth, i won't deny).

I think he’s a good signing but he’s not good enough for the premier league

He was banned from playing against Luton by the club

No he wasn't 😂

I have nothing but love for Dion and didn't boo him any time he played against us but the reason why some people did is that he refused to play for us whilst under contract

Obviously others did because they are fecking idiots

Every club in England is a selling club, except for about 6

And length of service is a big one if they are first team and appear most matches

I'm sure at the time wee gordon said it, but it was a long time ago so I may be mistaken but he did get lawyers involved to try and push a move as I remember

It’s basically fact now anyway so wouldn’t worry about it. Repeat anything enough.

Dublin is my all time hero & I have had the pleasure of meeting him too, great guy.

I for one never booed him, I can understand why some did, but now in the cold light of day it's become clear that he was forced out really.

Richardson just wanted to cash in on him & agreed a cloak & daggers deal with Blackburn behind Dion's back. Dion didn't want to go there & Richardson got pissed at him.
Once it came out about the release clause etc. Dion wanted to pursue the move that was right for him & why shouldn't he? Pained us of course that it was Villa but for him personally & his career it was a good move to make. Villa were top of the Premier League at the time & worth noting he didn't even get a pay rise to go there, he signed for the same £20,000 p/w that he was on with us, turning down more money from Blackburn & Leeds.

Of course it suited the club to keep the narrative that he was forcing the move when in reality he'd done right by the club by signing a new contract (yes on higher wages) to ensure we at least got something resembling his true value.

What has never come out is why Richardson tried to hawk him off to Blackburn I believe for £6million when there was a release clause in his new Cov contract saying he could talk to any club offering more than £5million, Villa famously offered 5 million and a pound, perhaps illustrates why our finances went down the toilet with that idiot as chairman.

There's always a sweet spot for certain players who either because of lack of ambition, limited talent, or old-fashioned loyalty can still rack up a ton of appearances with one club, while at the still time improving as a player/helping the team progress.

People often sneer at it (myself included), but being a local lad and/or having a personal relationship of sorts with the fans often helps as well, and quite right too.

I suppose you also have to have some kind of celebration (promotion/title/cup win etc) to cement it in your head. I wouldn't be able to tell you who had the most appearances for us during the first Championship/L1 years, but ever since the L2 season I can catch myself getting misty-eyed about Jack Grimmer for crying out loud.
