Hamer (3 Viewers)

Or we get less because he gets injured, we don't replace Gyokeres as well aswe'd like or sign a defence to play for his contract, and instead we end up with eight Jamie Allens playing full back, centre back, and centre forward.

Or we sell one Hamer to buy three or four future Hamers, two of them work out so we have two Hamers instead of one.
With respect I don’t think you have a clue what you are on about.
I’ll say this, I’m certain Robins knows exactly the position of Vik & Hamer, at the moment they are our players for another 12 months. I am also confident he will know what he will do should one or both leave, MR has been round the block a few times now, got his new recruitment team in and will have his ducks in a row. I think recruitment wise we are in an okay position compared to a lot in our division.

Why is it lunacy to suggest the people who signed Hamer can sign another Hamer?

Were you once of those people who decided it was lunacy not to sign Walsh...?
Where's the word lunacy come from? I just think it's unlikely. Not every opinion has to be so extreme.

And no. In fact I was one who was always saying Walsh had no record of performing in the Championship and his injuries would have made him a very risky signing.

How long into the summer before the Doug out threads begin?
When we play our first game of the season with Robins telling us our one signing to replace Hamer and Gyokeres is one of real quality - he was excellent in the centre midfield role for Wrexham in their national league winning side - Tongue in cheek of course

Who of those did we spend £1mil for?

Also very unfair to lup Allen in with the others!
I am not saying he us like the others. I am saying if you sign four players this is a possible scenario. A couple of decent players and a couple of duds. Likelihood of unearthing a couple of Hamers is low.

I am sat on the fence slightly with this, does Hamer deserve a new contract with better terms based on his performances since he joined the club? Easily yes.

Outwardly saying "pay him whatever he wants" is very dangerous. If you pay Hamer X then what's to stop other players either already here or we are talking to demanding the same? Suddenly the club goes from overspending to being in deep trouble. This club has already fallen to the very bottom of the league due to the years of overspending, learn the lessons from history.

Also, to those posting "DK needs to bank role this" or "DK needs to invest to keep our best players" this is not going to happen. DK will invest in the infrastructure (training ground as an example) which will help the club long term, does securing Hamer to a contract that is double or triple his current wage help the club long term? There is no guarantee or promotion or that Hamer is sold and we recoup a transfer fee, a new three-year contract at £20K suddenly looks troubling if Hamer does an ACL and is out for a season which holds the same chances.

I'd be inclined to offer Hamer a new deal, but if the club have a wage structure then I wouldn't be breaking it for one player.

I can see both sides of the argument but King hasn’t helped the situation with his talk of the play-offs. Let's just say he doesn’t majorly increase the budget and we don't get back in the play-offs within the next few years, would he sack Robins?

To be honest re. how much we spend, how much we stick with or change the wage structure, it's pretty much speculation on our part what the plan is with Gus and the rest of the squad. We don't know if King is willing to put in some of his own money, perhaps is seeking other partners, or even has eyes on selling to someone who will take us forward. He's seen what MR can achieve on a tight budget, maybe he'll come up with some idea that investors will think is worth taking a punt.

You can’t run a transfer window on being worried about players doing their ACL

This is what I’ve been saying - we’d be throwing our toys out the pram if Joy did this

No you're right we shouldn't, merely highlighting that anything can and does happen in Football.

Nor really. I don’t have an issue with it. It’s a target/aim. We’ve got a busy transfer window ahead, what will ambitious players want to hear from a club who’s after them ‘Id take staying up for a couple of years’ or ‘this year wasn’t a one off and we’re aiming for play offs in future as well’.

I’m sure DK and Robins will have discussed this. If it doesn’t happen and Robins has been working on a shoestring budget I can’t imagine his position will be under any threat. If he wastes millions and we’re struggling at the bottom maybe it’s a different story

Exactly, back in the day we bought Mick Harford who played one game, scored and never kicked a ball for us again.
We also signed Keith O’Neil and Tim Sherwood. The fact is you can’t be sitting there going, “nah sorry don’t fancy buying x - he might do his cruciate and we’d be shit out of luck”

In what way is paying £20k/wk in the Championship for a players third contract when he’s one of the best in the league and worth millions “crazy wages”?

If he’s worth millions - let’s say £10 million - that and his contract wages would give you £13m to replace him

But that’s a double edged sword - if you show ambition the fans then expect you to put up. Remember operation Premiership?

you’ve also got the issue of ambitious players saying “yeah I’m on board” but they’d assume you were being backed and therefore the wages are likely to be higher

It is different now though not sure what the exact Robins budget was last season but if I remember correct he had to use some to spruce up the bloody painting at Ryton, as said things thankfully are different now.

I'd have an issue if we didn't use much of the money received for replacement player(s), improved infrastructure etc, and instead it went to repaying loans. If I can see the club as a whole being improved, however, I'd accept a worse season on the field, even a poor one, as I'd know we were on the right track to improve overall. Pudding, eating and all that, but since King came in, regardless of whether you rated them or not, we signed McNally, Norton-Cuffy, Wilson-Esbrand and didn't sell Gyokeres or Hamer. Off the field we've employed more staff and committed to the Ryton pitches. If we continue in that vein it may not be the exciting way to do it, but the club as a whole is certainly better off, to date, than it would have been under previous encumbents. Now we have to see that continue.

Ever since McGinnity took over however, we've basically been shrinking as a club, and not just on the playing side. I want to see us built back up so the playoffs does indeed become an expectation rather than an overperformance.

Don’t disagree with that but you can tell them you’ve got ambition but that’s within a structure that won’t put club at risk and that everyone will be rewarded if we ever achieve promotion

That’s true - but if we’re after top 6, it would be reasonable to assume we’re looking at the same players as West Brom, Sunderland, Middlesbrough - Possibly Millwall and Blackburn.

all of those teams likely to offer more - who’s the player likely to pick, us or them?

I leave out Norwich and Watford as they’re parachute payment teams and therefore probably in a different market

I don’t think we’d find a player with the same fit and impact for that money who wants to play here TBH.

You offer him £20k/wk with a gentleman’s agreement that if we don’t go up well entertain bids from higher divisions/abroad.

Losing him and Vik in one summer is harsh, and I wouldn’t blame either for flat out turning down the idea of a new deal and looking to move higher. The fact we’ve apparently got the talisman of our side willing to stick around is a massive bonus we should jump on.

We won’t get that but if we did with a year left it would be insanity to turn down

it’s also Chinese whispers he’d stay with that anyway

“Over here in the real world”? We play in a division where the wages to turnover ratio is around 125%. If you want to play in the real world, we eventually have to play somewhere else.
We literally just got to the playoff final without spending stupid money on individual wages.

Now people are crying saying we will never be able to compete in this league without doing this

Batshit crazy, good night

That’s enough internet for me today

We can’t and shouldn’t try to compete with clubs that have got more cash (or willing to risk going bust). If someone would rather go to one of those then fair enough. West Brom are apparently in the shit financially though. I’d probably only say Boro is possibly a more attractive option from watching last season (maybe I’m a bit biased though). If a player wants to accept more in wages now that’s their call, some will look at other aspects/bigger picture though….location, style/culture of club, can manager improve them, formation/how they might fit in etc

I mean sure but not smoke without fire and we can only discuss the rumour as it is.

£10m is a lot of money and I’d be surprised to see us get that, I think it would be more likely if he had just signed a new deal mind.
