i think there will be a date as a cut off point. We know keeping him to run down the next year won’t happen. So leaves two options which is sell him or he signs a new contract.

A date must be set of day august 1st or opening game of the season and if not signed then you won’t play and you will be up for sale. This is just my opinion and that’s how I would play it. Not sure what else you can do.

If he wants to run down his contact and refuse a move, he's perfectly entitled to do that.
