To be honest its not a shock a lot of people I know use other sources for there music ( mostly legal ) to get the music and videos. So just a surprize it taken as long as it has.

Cd sales still actually accounted for 50% of all music sales in 2010.
We're all poorer for it.
What joy is there without the tactile, perousal of eons worth of material where you could while away an hour of freetime of an afternoon between shifts ,or on a weekend morning .Austerity will kill this country .Millions of families with no disposable income will lead to more and more of this ,jobless people ,less rates for councils to pressurise public sector even further ,we are in a spiral.

I worked there for years Cloughie. I was there at the start when Pete Neale started it (it was my brothers idea, but Pete had the original shop). They were best mates.

Doubt if it was the internet that killed it off 15 years ago, would have taken about a week to download anything then, if you could!
Hardly any independent record stores left now, used to go into Discovery Records in Leamington all the time when younger, they used to have these packs of 10 singles for a couple of quid, but you never knew what would be in them!
Some good stuff, some crap, and some new discoveries.
Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Blockbuster go next, don't know how they're still going now to be honest.
Carnage on the High Street this year.

It's an interesting turn of events. The likes of HMV, Waterstones and Blockbusters put a lot of local music, book and video stores out of business. Now they are collapsing in the digital age. The irony here could be the return of some independent stores, fulfilling a market need for vintage goods/a vintage experience. Of course, then we may see a chain called Analogue, specialising in VHS, records and hardbacks...

It wasn't so much downloading stuff. It was the fact that people could go online and buy collectable stuff from all over the world instead of just going into town to browse our shop. The decline started 15 years ago. Nothing to do with downloading! We were a collectable record specialist shop not chart crap!
That was 2 years ago!!! Since then the use of smartphones, tablets etc... has by far taken over the high-street for music and gaming and even watching films etc...
The Iphone you can do all the above without having to leave the house.
Times change and shops like Virgin and HMV don't go with the times.
Same with Jessops, the camera's on phones now are very good which means people print there own pictures now.
Exactly. People complain (like with Woolworths and Jessops) but very few actually shopped there, hence them going bust !
Ill miss HMV and still hope they have a handful of stores around the country. Both Jessops and HMV had 3 shops in Birmingham city centre up until a couple of years ago. Who needs 3 stores in one city centre. Badly run businesses !!!
Why they didnt get ahead of the curve with a download site, ill never know. Jessops, should have been more price competitive (or at least runa price match option).
Feel sorry for the employees, however, the writing has been on teh wall for a while now.

The writing was on the wall for HMV for a long while sadly, i never buy CD's from a shop, all on line at the moment. I still like the physicality of a CD over downloads but you can see CD's being phased out altogether. I cannot remember the last time i brought a CD system, this all gets played through computer or TV now!!
This will effect games also, xbox are trying to move to download format also so they can drop the price of games slightly and take the larger share of the market.
It wont be long until we dont have a city centre!

I can't see GAME being around for much longer either. They've been struggling for a while now. It's all going online through either the post or digital download. The retail side of DVD's/Games/Music really needs to evolve.
Also, Coventry City Council really need to step up and help get shops in this city. Letting small independent shops in would really make this city unique and special and worth the travel into town. It's working well in other city's so we need to keep up. Of course, this being Coventry City council they'll probably just up the tax for shops instead. :facepalm:
