The Athletic's 2022-23 Premier League season tickets survey
More than half of Premier League clubs have increased ticket prices for the 2022-23 season, a survey by The Athletic has foundtheathletic.com
Was thinking earlier this week. The club don't seem to do anything to reach out to lapsed fans.
I haven't been all season (and most of last season) and had a season ticket last year (which I used twice) Would be a good idea to target them with targetted marketing offers. Must be a fair few to go after.
Couldn’t agree more. The fact that we can’t get 20,000 home fans to attend on a regular basis in the top half of the Championship us awful. The apathy around the city of Coventry towards the football club is shocking - but just watch if we still have a chance to get in the playoffs in mid April, every man and his dog will be claiming life long allegiance in the hope of getting tickets for the play offs (although to be fair I thought the same thing for the home Notts County playoff game, when there was less than 20k there in total). Our fanbase is fucking shocking, simple as that.
Play off chasing team, we should be selling tickets like hot cakes at 25 quid a pop.
I appreciate there are people for whom money is tight, but equally they'll be plenty sat in some boozer with an illegal stream on tanning pints and chisel.
Of course they're quite entitled to do that, but let's not pretend our support is anything other than below average at best.
How come you haven't been as much this year without asking personally?
Can't believe you've not taking the opportunity to drive down from Merseyside with scarves flying out of your car windows.
frankly as a lapsed fan if you want to see a play off challenge what marketing do you want? It’s not awareness marketing is it?
We've spent most of this season in the bottom half, and we're the 9th best supported club in the division.Couldn’t agree more. I have followed this club for the best part of 50 years and I traveled away regularly for 20 odd years when I was younger. Our current away support has been incredible, probably for the last 10 years, but in the late 70s/ early 1980s there were occasions when there were less than a hundred of us.
To me Coventry is not a football city like other one club cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland or Leeds. Even Derby get bigger gates than us. I often wonder what % of our attendance actually live in the city currently.
it hurts me to agree with them but when the likes of Sunderland etc say our ground is too big for us, they are right. Perhaps if we ever get back to the PL we will prove them all wrong.
All excuses - and I’m not slagging off anyone who goes to games, it’s the ones who only turn up for big games. I used to attend a lot of games when we were in Birmingham ( not all admittedly) but could I get a ticket for our ‘home’ match in the FA Cup v Birmingham? We've spent most of this season in the bottom half, and we're the 9th best supported club in the division.
What crowds do you think we should be getting?
Has Derby, Leeds, or Sunderland have their team deliberately taken away from them to a different city? Have they had decades of shite to deal with, that wiped out a whole generation of fans?
There is something really unique with us that doesn't seem to exist at any other club in English football. A strand of our fanbase seems to take great delight in slagging off our support, whilst making excuses for other teams support. I really can't understand it.

Those teams were better supported than us long before Northampton happened.
And they've had a lot of shit to deal with, not as much as us, granted, but they've had their fair share.
I’m talking about the whole time I have been supporting the club. How is it we could take c16k fans to Wednesday in 87 when the Saturday we played them at home in front of 14k, including away fans? What big games? We haven't had any big home games for at least 5 years
Why pick those 3 teams?
Serious question, what average crowd would you expect a mid table Championship team to have?
Coventry is very much a football city and has amongst the most dedicated and passionate supporters in this league. We witness that week in week out. Simply wouldn't swap our support for that of any other club tbh.
The numbers frustrate at times, but then we've sold a record number of STs this season, so it's hardly that we're not responding.
Problem is, people grossly overstate the size of the city and the extent of our pull. Comparisons with Leeds are mad, it is huge, bigger than Liverpool and Manchester. So too Newcastle, it's metro area is enormous in comparison. Coventry has an urban area population similar to Newport, Reading, Birkenhead and Preston. There is a wider catchment area of course (same applies to those other places too), but our pull there is minimal, there are just so many clubs in the area.
We have top 10 gates in the championship. Shouldn't be crying about that.
Where are the 40k Millwall fans who were at Wembley a few years ago? How could Oxford take 28K to Wembley and get 5000 the next week? Cardiff get lower gates than us but would take 40K to Wembley in a heartbeat. I'm not sure what your point is.I’m talking about the whole time I have been supporting the club. 30k plus v Crewe, 28k v Gillingham, 40k plus at Wembley twice, where are they all now?
You're conflating 2 things here, the passion of those that attend, which is up there with the best, and actual attendances, which are average at best.
And I'm not crying about it, just stating facts, people are entitled to spend their money as they please.

We will get over 20kI don't know why those 3, it was you that mentioned them.
And we should be getting over 20k home fans easily for our only home game left this month and one that can put us in the top 6.
We will get over 20k
You areAgree - I've got to drive my son up to Leeds Uni for an open day, so there's one less (ST holder, so maybe I'm still there?)
We're getting around 18.5k each week (6k of which are non season ticket holders). That will not be the same 6k each game. Some people might only go to every third game. Those are still regular supporters.
When there is a big game they all want to go to that one game, which would bump it up to around 30k. They are still regular supporters, just ones that can't always make it to the same game.
As for 1987, in the 1986-87 season we were the 14th best supported team in the First Division, and in 1987-88 season we were the 11th best supported team in the division. For comparison that would be like averaging 31k and 36k in the Premier League today

Exactly. We all want to go to a big game. We're not unique as a club for thatIt amazes me that people don't seem to get that, that they think it is the same 18K every week. We have a pool of supporters, many of whom pick and choose, but every now and again they pick and choose the same game because it is a big occasion.

Truthfully, because I spent most weekends at the game post Covid and ended up hammered getting in at all hours. Spent the last year training so it was getting in the way of my goals in a nutshell! That and I work away a fair bit...
Miss it massively and severe FOMO most weekends!
I always wondered whether we are different from say Leicester in that respect, as in we have a greater number of unique attendees but just at lower frequencyIt amazes me that people don't seem to get that, that they think it is the same 18K every week. My point is that I disagree with your assertion that “Coventry is very much a football city”. Maybe in the 1960s or very early 70s but since then? No. Nearly all of the people who I know that attend regularly don’t actually live in CoventryWhere are the 40k Millwall fans who were at Wembley a few years ago? How does any of that disprove that Coventry is a football city?My point is that I disagree with your assertion that “Coventry is very much a football city”. Apparently Leeds, Newcastle and Sunderland are unrealistic comparisons - what about Ipswich then?
I also get your point that it’s not the same people that go every week - I was one of them for a few years when my kids were little.
I suppose that most of my annoyance stems from the fact that I now live over 90 miles from the CBS and attend all home games whilst people who actually live in the city seem incapable of dragging themselves up there on a regular basis.
