STAR striker David McGoldrick insists Coventry City’s off-field problems won’t affect his decision whether to join Coventry City on a permanent basis.

The on-loan Forest front man scored two in the Sky Blues’ 5-1 thrashing of Walsall on Saturday to make him the leading scorer in League One with 13, and bump up his overall tally to 15 in all competitions this season, prompting more calls for City to sign him up.

But any concerns that the player may be put off by the club’s on-going rent row with ACL, the company that runs the Ricoh Arena, resulting in a statutory demand for £1.1million in arrears and threat of a winding up order when the Boxing Day deadline expires, have been allayed.

"We’ve had reassurances from the gaffer who has made it clear that it won’t affect things on the field," said McGoldrick who will not be short of takers come the January transfer window.

"In respect of the boys’ wages being paid I don’t think that will be a problem so it’s between the owner and the company who run the Ricoh and I don’t see it having a bearing on my decision. Coventry are talking to me and Forest and there are things going on."

His current goal rush has seen him hit 13 in 13 to further enhance his rejuvenated reputation in the game and attract a string of scouts from Championship and other clubs to check him out.

But the 25-year-old admits he feels a sense of loyalty to the Sky Blues for giving him the chance to get his career back on track with regular first-team football at a time when others didn’t want to know.

"It’s nice to feel wanted," he said. "There have been a couple of clubs I was going to go to at the start of the season suddenly turning up at games.

"It’s funny that they didn’t want me and now they are sniffing about, but I have had no other offers from anyone else. There may be interest but I am just concentrating on scoring goals for this club.

"I owe a lot to Coventry because my name has been forgotten about over the last few years and they have given me the chance to play every week and score all these goals.

"It’s a great club from the training ground to the stadium and if it was my home it would be a great home, but there are other things I have to consider."

Carl Baker, who has struck an impressive understanding with the striker, revealed he is doing all he can to convince him to stay.

"I asked him what was in his mind and tried to tell him the grass is not always greener because you see some players go to some clubs and lose their form or don’t play week in, week out," he said.

"But he seems to be really happy here and is scoring goals. He’s got a great relationship with all the lads and he says he loves it here so hopefully the club can do something to sort it out because I think he can be the difference between getting us back up around the play-offs and not."

Both managers praised McGoldrick’s contribution to the M6 derby. Although Walsall’s Dean Smith insisted his second goal should have been disallowed he said: "We never handled him at all well but he’s a class above this league.

"He’s a Championship player and Andy Butler, who is our captain and leader, struggled against him. He’ll be disappointed with that – and the fact he got sent off for two fouls that should never have been bookings."

Mark Robins added: "David was hungry today – that wasn’t the case in the previous game, but fright from the minute he came in you could see that he was the David McGoldrick that supporters have come to love."

EDIT: clearly meant Dm in the thread title not DC...... ooops!

Lets hope he does stay, maybe with Baker saying the grass isn't always greener(sooo true DMC) will make him think he'd rather PLAY in a successful team than go somewhere and warm the bench. Maybe he'll look at teams like Southampton and Norwich and think he could be playing in the premiership in a few seasons.:D;)

It definately would be nice if we could do something and sign him.
But i am not overly optimistic of this happening, players have spouted this sort of thing in the past and not signed.
So if it happens great and it shows sisu intent.
But i am not going to lose sleep over it because i don't expect it to happen.

Tbh it sounds as if he is not trying to upset fans and is thanking the club for giving him an opportunity to play regular football. If a championship club is after him you can't blame home for singing for them.

I don't think he will stay. But if he is gone to a champ club then good luck to him. Will be hard to replace.

the one bit that gives me some comfort, is the fact he recognises clubs didnt want to know and know they are sniffing around.

If course it wont he's not staying...

cue the "Coventry will always be special to me, however I could not pass up the opportunity of joining Leeds and making a push for the premiership" quote in early January

He's going a funny way about it, almost ridiculing other clubs for not wanting to know about him before!

I note the Walsall boss commenting he's a champ player. Mind games to help convince him to move away from a rival club?

If we do manage to sign him it will be a huge coup for SISU in their PR battle with the fans. Do agree grass in not always greener. I think its in the balance at the moment. But with our current form and the chance of a Wembley visit never a better time to persude a player to stay. That goes for Bailey as well.

He is already under contract at a Championship side.

I still say there is a good chance he will stay. There is more to life than a short term gain in cash. He would risk moving from a club that could win things this season, first name on the team sheet and admired by the fans to a club where he could warm the bench and become just another player.

Most players nowadays are well-trained in speaking in generally positive platitudes about every club they play for throughout their careers. It means nowt.

He has a very short career and may not be good at anything else in particular. He will sign for the club that pays the most - this is why he employs an agent in the first place, so he can disassociate himself from such a commercial decision: "It's not up to me, it's my agent...".

And what is more, I would do the same. It's his job.

Not all most players go where the most money is. Keogh went to Derby when he was offered more money elsewhere.

So who is offering him more money then?

It's all a question of intergrity...If McGoldrick has it he'll stay. The first thing a player wants to do is make a name for himself and he's doing that here. If he keeps scoring goals he will always be in demand, so no worries there for him....no need for him to push any panic buttons and cash in on a good spell. If he moves to the Championship and the goals dry up, so will his reputation. Let's really hope he's one of those footballers who knows what's good for him, and doesn't just become another talent who went nowhere cos he was chasing the big bucks.

They can afford a big squad. One of our players is now off the wage bill. Maybe more to follow.

What can they afford the least. McG or not getting promoted? Promotion would pay for him a few times over.

i sincerely hope he stays, BUT, i fear he will be used in press manipulation by our owners,
the usual, 'well we made him several offers but we weren't able to compete or match others, blah blah, blah,'
if he goes he will become another one that got away,
primarily because our owners have repeatedly let players go, under real value,
let's face it sisu are to football what john prescott would be to ballet

Good Morning all.
The player himself has made it Known he likes it at Coventry, and why Wouldn't he, he is in the form of his life, scoring goals fo fun, and attracting the attention of championship clubs, in truth, he must be the hottest property arround outside of the Premiership, and if he does leave in January, it will be a major blow to the clubs ability to maintain the excellent run of form, and a bitter Disappointment to the fans, who now have a super Hero to focus their passion upon. I personally view it as a mirror image of the Marlon KIng situation and how much we nose dived after we lost him.
It is of my opinion, the issue depends on the off the pitch debacle, The mexican stand off, which has seen SISU reject a most generous slash of 60%i n the rent
Revenue from match day catering, and a lengthy time to pay back what they owe, it would seem, the hounds from the city, can smell blood, and are ready to turn the screw on ACL with the threat of seeking alternative venues to play the home games in, this move would certainly mean the end of Coventry City FC with the blame firmly lodged at ACL's front door.
Getting back to DM the move to sign him will certainly be scupperd, if the move from the Ricoh does go ahead, which incidently I consider to be a Dummy Spitting Threat by SiSu, the player himself would not be interested in playing in Stadia which hardly meet FL requirements, and he wouldn't be on his own either.
It is vital for our future that we remain at the Ricoh, and I think we will, but it Galls me to think that SISU Finance our clandestine owners will be shafting the HIggs Trust and the Coventry city council, but there maybe more drama in this long running epic to come.

A Club spokesman said "We could pay his (McGoldrick's) wages, but the fans were getting upset that we weren't being fair with ACL, so we're going to give all our money to them. We've already had messages from fans saying that our reputation in the wider football world is far more important than success on the pitch. In fact, we have agreed to ACL doubling the rent."

Some thoughts....

DM will leave
DM's form will then fall off a cliff

Hahaha. " we will also be donating several million pounds to women's charities after our dalliance with marlon king, we hope this will bring back the thousands of fans we alienated over this saga"
