STAR striker David McGoldrick insists Coventry City’s off-field problems won’t affect his decision whether to join Coventry City on a permanent basis.
The on-loan Forest front man scored two in the Sky Blues’ 5-1 thrashing of Walsall on Saturday to make him the leading scorer in League One with 13, and bump up his overall tally to 15 in all competitions this season, prompting more calls for City to sign him up.
But any concerns that the player may be put off by the club’s on-going rent row with ACL, the company that runs the Ricoh Arena, resulting in a statutory demand for £1.1million in arrears and threat of a winding up order when the Boxing Day deadline expires, have been allayed.
"We’ve had reassurances from the gaffer who has made it clear that it won’t affect things on the field," said McGoldrick who will not be short of takers come the January transfer window.
"In respect of the boys’ wages being paid I don’t think that will be a problem so it’s between the owner and the company who run the Ricoh and I don’t see it having a bearing on my decision. Coventry are talking to me and Forest and there are things going on."
His current goal rush has seen him hit 13 in 13 to further enhance his rejuvenated reputation in the game and attract a string of scouts from Championship and other clubs to check him out.
But the 25-year-old admits he feels a sense of loyalty to the Sky Blues for giving him the chance to get his career back on track with regular first-team football at a time when others didn’t want to know.
"It’s nice to feel wanted," he said. "There have been a couple of clubs I was going to go to at the start of the season suddenly turning up at games.
"It’s funny that they didn’t want me and now they are sniffing about, but I have had no other offers from anyone else. There may be interest but I am just concentrating on scoring goals for this club.
"I owe a lot to Coventry because my name has been forgotten about over the last few years and they have given me the chance to play every week and score all these goals.
"It’s a great club from the training ground to the stadium and if it was my home it would be a great home, but there are other things I have to consider."
Carl Baker, who has struck an impressive understanding with the striker, revealed he is doing all he can to convince him to stay.
"I asked him what was in his mind and tried to tell him the grass is not always greener because you see some players go to some clubs and lose their form or don’t play week in, week out," he said.
"But he seems to be really happy here and is scoring goals. He’s got a great relationship with all the lads and he says he loves it here so hopefully the club can do something to sort it out because I think he can be the difference between getting us back up around the play-offs and not."
Both managers praised McGoldrick’s contribution to the M6 derby. Although Walsall’s Dean Smith insisted his second goal should have been disallowed he said: "We never handled him at all well but he’s a class above this league.
"He’s a Championship player and Andy Butler, who is our captain and leader, struggled against him. He’ll be disappointed with that – and the fact he got sent off for two fouls that should never have been bookings."
Mark Robins added: "David was hungry today – that wasn’t the case in the previous game, but fright from the minute he came in you could see that he was the David McGoldrick that supporters have come to love."
EDIT: clearly meant Dm in the thread title not DC...... ooops!
