This is a position where we really need it. Not every player over 30 can just be written off because our general model is about younger players. Who do you suggest we go for?
It's a position we need certainly to bolster and I'm not writing every player over 30 off. It's clear as day that we require experience desperately and in an ideal world Robins would have the means to bring in a player of this ilk. But gambling what little budget we have left - if we have any at all - on an unfit 34 year old who hasn't played for nearly a year is completely illogical. Not every player over 30 can be written off but in the same breath we can't just go for any 30+ year old.
For experience? I couldn't tell you. I wouldn't touch the free agent market as in my opinion it'll likely take weeks, maybe even months for them to get up to speed - depending on how long they have been out of the game. Perhaps we could enquire into players who are surplus to requirements at Championship clubs. Unfortunately our options are limited for this category as wages are likely to pose a problem and you have to contend with the obvious - why is it that they're unwanted. E.g. Too many players in front of them in the pecking order or just simply their career is on a downward trajectory.
I've consistently said that our only feasible option (unless Robins and the backroom staff are able to pull a rabbit out of the hat) is to sacrifice experience and bring in a PL loan. Someone like West Brom's Rekeem Harper would be ideal but I believe Celtic might be lining up a deal for him. Or Brighton's Jayson Molumby who played around 40 times for Millwall last season.
