Yes
And if I had to pick a player who was successful and helped us stay up at a higher level, it’d be James.
Kelly over James - wow - luckily you’re not the manager. ;)
I think you're right. I would be an unmitigated disaster if I were the manager. But then again I think you would be too!
I would sooner have Kelly and Walsh than James, just an opinion.

Walsh over James for me too, all day long.

We have a development model that relies on us picking up promising young talent, developing them and selling for a profit. It's the only way we can progress as a club, look at Brentford.

We don't have a model where we spunk all our wages on long term contracts for old players with poor injury records that have already peaked, look at Sunderland.

I, for one, can't wait to sing 'it could've been you' when we're 3-0 up at Ashton Gate next season.

But for his injuries James would be playing in the Premier League. Walsh hasn't yet convinced at Championship level.
I would have liked us to sign Matty James and appreciate what he did to help improve us enough to finish well enough to be healthily out of trouble. We have a number of players who can all play cm at the moment and I’m sure MR has other targets and in my opinion has done the right thing not committing to a long and high contract for a soon to be 30 year old.
I don’t know if Liam Walsh is still an option I’d gladly take him as for lack of championship experience what experience did Callum O’Hare have this time last season, we have all seen what Walshy has to offer and I think he would fit in perfectly into our midfield options.

He might have been good enough for the PL at one stage, but as no PL team came in for him, you would have to say that the Championship is now his level. I like him, he is a good player but of the two I would sooner have Walsh.
So how many premier clubs have come in for Walsh? I like Walsh a lot but I'd take James over him every time

Have I missed something this last month ?
have we signed Walsh ?
has MR confirmed we are actively looking sign him ?
seems to be a lot of people automatically thinking we are signing Walsh. We dont even know he is an option.
there could be a lot of disappointed people on here if we dont

Walsh doesn’t have to be PL class, just up to a good Championship standard. It was you who mentioned James and his PL days, which seem to be behind him.

It’s funny how as soon as a player rejects us he wasn’t even that good - James was a class above the rest of the team last season - I’m sure Robins would have done all he could to sign him.
Based on how James and Kelly played for us last season and how Walsh played in League One, I would still have the same opinion of these players whether James had signed for us or not. Its just a point of view that’s different to yours.

Agree about James ability wise but unfortunately our what seems delicate financial position which might have affected other deals probably scuppered any deal.

Yeah I would wager that James was Robins number 1 target this summer.

Didnt You say clubs will be reducing contracts on offer to players this season?

It was reported by Keiren McGuire on the pod cast the "Price of Football" that early contract offers across the EFL were between 25-30% reduced overall.
Obviously, clubs may prioritise certain players and pay a pre-COVID rate. However, this is very early days in the transfer cycle and it'll be interesting to see how the market reacts.

Clubs seem to be trying to pad out their squads with out of contract players to eke out their budgets. Birmingham have just signed that Ryan Woods from Millwall - the ginger haired bloke who looked awful against us. Waste of money, even if free.

Slightly surprised at this thread as several others said on a different thread some time ago that James had agreed to join Brizzle
It's just that it's only now become official
Who's to say we haven't done similar deals with incoming players which will only be announced once our staff return to Ryton?

Might be missing something here but why would it only need to be announced when the staff are back? That’s not how most clubs do business is it?

It’s all rather odd. Forgive me for being cynical but are we actually out of the transfer embargo? Boddy saying we’re going to need to wait longer for signings and Sheaf/Dinanga not being announced.

I did and think they are obviously don’t know the money James is on but in my opinion it is the three year contract that sold him the deal at 30 and with his injury issues that’s very attractive.

All the renewed contracts from last season were agreed and signed well ahead of the announcement at the end of the season
Usually incoming players will have photos and interviews recorded for the club media so if the staff are on furlough this would have to wait
Kasta was signed well before it was announced for example
I have no details but from what Dave Boddy said a similar situation may apply now

Are we the only club with people on holiday or on furlough, it hasn't stopped others

I have an inkling we'll do some announcements on 1st July - Sheaf and Dinanga for sure but at least one more along with them would be preferable.

Not sure why they'd leave them to then if the inks dried but I'm willing to wait an extra week until then before totally shitting the bed.

Makes sense with the 1st being a Thursday too

This “oh maybe we’ve made loads of signings in secret” bit seems very desperate. When have we ever done that?

I don't think it's being done in secret as such,it's more that they like to announce in a certain way, and it's not been possible to line things up to do it, whether on the player side or the staff side. It's pretty common knowledge we've made a couple of signings which will be announced at some point (Sheaf/Dinanga), it's not a stretch to think there may be a couple of others in a similar situation.
