For Jan definitely need
CM, CB, RB
- (CM) someone dynamic box to box and can pass a ball
- (CB) experienced head that can actually run and play in a 4 (rules out Coady)
- (RB) someone to come in for Milan when he needs a rest, like now

My suggestions:

(CM)

- Majeed Ashimeru (27) Anderlecht

Would certainly be a punt but watching a few clips on Youtube and looking at his stats could be a good option

- Markus Karlsson (20) Hammarby

Same club we signed Dovin from so might have had a look at him but good passing stats and tackling

- Matty Longstaff (24) Toronto

Good stats in America, a progressive midfielder, if he can produce anything similar to his brother we’d be mint

- Alex Matos (20) Chelsea

Cheeky Lampard link, was at Huddersfield last season and has played almost anywhere on the pitch mainly CM and RW

- Will Smallbone (24) Southampton

Most likely loan but was injured start of year so hasnt has a look in really this year ran the show against us last season both games for Southampton

- Michal Sadílek (25) FC Twente

Out of contract end of season so potential for a cheap steal here, missed most of the season so far injured but starting to build up again, captained his side to a 6-1 loss against PSV, but has an assist in 4 games (143 minutes) previous years been a good CM/CDM in the dutch top flight

- Luke Cundle (22) Wolves

Spent time at Stoke, Plymouth and Swansea in this tier so certainly knows his way around it, would most likely be a loan but potentially we could sign him in the summer provided he doesnt turn out to be a class above

(CB)

- Rob Holding (29) Crystal Palace

Getting 0 look in at Palace and can play in a 4 got that elite experience King wants perhaps could be a good head around the squad

- Liam Lindsay (29) Preston

Could he finally be the key to beating Preston at Deepdale their club captain and a stalwart in their defence for a couple years, good defender and could be the ideal player to partner Thomas

- Jimmy Dunne (27) QPR

Quality in the air, mobile and can tackle all action defender that has been a key player for QPR this season and last

- Michal Helik (29) Huddersfield

By far and away one of the best defenders in league one, was a mainstay in Barnsley’s playoff season and a danger from set plays

(RB)

- Josh Acheampong (18) Chelsea

Would definitely be a loan, raw but definitely got ability think Chelsea would be fine with him being back up to Milan as he would definitely get minutes with the fixture pileup and potential downturn in form to MvE.

- Emil Krafth (30) Newcastle

Potentially wrongside of 30 but as a rotation option with Milan could be good played at the top level for a long time and can play wingback and CB

- Jeremy Ngakia (24) Watford

Showed a lot of early promise but seems to have fallen down Watfords pecking order and had a couple injuries, so could be available on his day a good RB at this level

- Ethan Laird (23) Birmgham

Very good defensive stats for a full back in league 1, was very good when he went to Bournemouth and Swansea, but seems to have regressed a bit, however I’d back Lampard to help him get back to the quality RB he used to be and become a ready made replacement for when Milan leaves

- Bryan Reynolds (23) Westerlo

Good progressive stats in the belgian top flight, American u23 international may need to improve defensively but could be perfect for when we’re on the front foot and Milan tires

- Shuto Nakano (24) Hiroshima

High quality RB in the japanese league definitely one of the best 5 goals and 5 assists and very very good underlying stats

Any good left backs you can recommend ?

Lol more chance of me flying to the moon than us getting smallbone, every club in the league would want him

I don't think he really has a future here.

My point was that MVE is obviously first choice RB and will play there every minute that he's fit.

So there is no point in going out and spending on a backup RB at a probably inflated January price for someone who is hardly going to play when we could recall Burroughs to play a few minutes here and there when needed. He played 30 times in L1 last season so he's not a Sunday League player.
But playing MvE for every game is knackering him out. We can't have him playing every game or he's going to get injured. We need another option there just to be able to spread his workload. If not by the end of Jan we'll be looking for a RB anyway cos MvE will be injured.

Vale isn’t a left back is he?
Chelsea describe him as a versatile attacking player who can play left back, midfield or winger. From the highlights I've seen of him, he plays far more advanced than a left back and fair bit on the right wing.

Can't sleep and we're close to the transfer window so I've done some light late night scouting:

Satoshi Tanaka - 22 - CDM - Albirex Nigata. 33 games; 4 goals, 4 assists. 7.35 avg rating on Fotmob. Plays as a single pivot but creates an impressive amount for his team's deepest midfielder. Also exceptional ball-winning numbers. Looks like a little Kante in some of his clips and in others he turns out of trouble impressively. Has a tendency to overplay and can be caught on the ball.

Lasse Berg Johnsen - 25 - CM - Malmo. I've talked about him loads. He's fantastic. Best player in Sweden by a country mile. Completes a ridiculous 85 passes a game. If we wanted a pure playmaker to hit line-breaking passes next to Sheaf in midfield he'd be the best choice.

Formose Mendy - 23 - CB - Lorient. Not the experienced head people would want use to sign for central defence but he has all the physical tools and excellent defensive numbers this season in Ligue 2. Senegal international. Was linked with West Ham 18 months ago.

It’s not going to happen before he leaves and we still need to ‘replace’ Hamer. More than anything, we miss a midfield player who carriers the ball in midfield. Torp, Eccles and Sheaf are all pass-first midfielders.
We failed again in August with midfielder - we did try. I’ll be dissatisfied if we haven’t got ducks in row to love on that asap in January ideally.

Are these realistic targets?

I think we were unlucky in the summer to be fair. It looked like we’d wrapped up Stamenic before being gazumped and then that caused us to miss out on Browne and there was this mystery loan that got injured too.

He isn't a left back but can play there, he's much better as you say higher up the pitch.

If we get a left back i'd like a specialist there.

It'll be interesting to see what profile of player we sign.

Obviously in recent times we've tried to find some value abroad in fairly unknown players - Hamer, Torp, Sakamoto, Raphael etc.

At Derby there was none of that for Lampard, it was established players in England (plus the Chelsea loans). Was that Lampard's preference or the clubs policy/limited scouting?

Presumably we already had targets lined up for Robins, I wonder if we'll progress with any of those or if FL will put his own stamp on it.

I'd imagine the manager gives the recruitment team things he's looking for in a player based on how the manager wants to play and they take in from there and come back with a shortlist, so some will have been thrown out while others remain. At least that's how i assume it works.

While that is going on managers also of course have players in mind that they have seen in person and wish to chase, Robins being a long time admirer of BTA, for example.

Long story short i'd think most our targets will change unless they come under the bracket of we are just tracking this one as we just think he's generally really really good.

This, Frank will see it totally different to Robins.

It’s worth noting that Lampard was a rookie at Derby so probably heavily relied on his Chelsea contacts and (iirc) his own experience in the Chelsea setup of upcoming stars than he would now.

Instinctually, I don’t think we necessarily need hot shot loanees, this season as a priority. If possible, get the targets we need for CM and CB and then look to supplement the squad with a AM, LB/RB or RW/LW.

For me, it’s our spine that needs addressing the most and permanent transfers need to be prioritised here.

As an idea for a deep lying playmaker. Could we look at Luca Connell from Barnsley.

Wouldn’t expect him to cost us too much.

Seems the sort of age we would be looking at. Really decent playmaking stats and decent rating for his matches this year. Could be the deep lying playmaker we seem to play alongside Sheaf?

We need a ball carrying midfielder the most, we currently have no one in the squad that takes the ball on the turn and pushes into space or beats a man. As soon as that happens you can either take a shot or put the ball into available space that is left after opposing players move to challenge you. Our current midfield does not possess the player that would unlock defences, they are all good but are more passive minded player that would look to pass through rather than break the line.

I’m always wary of any centre mid who only makes 30 passes a game. Makes you wonder why he’s not involved more and how comfortable he is when being pressed.
