Just looking back at a previous thread on Bristol City forum regarding JD when his contract was finishing as to whether they should offer him a new one prior to us signing him.
some interesting comments that basically reflect exactly what we are now seeing and his weaknesses. It appears nothing has changed and you have to ask if fans can see these weaknesses in his game then why didnt we.

Not for me, really can't see what he brings to the team. Going forward his crossing is nowhere near as good as Cam Pring and defensively he is easily targeted. It is a position for me that needs strengthening.

I think the main question is could you get better in the market?
Ryan Manning (Swansea) is approaching the end of his deal, and is a more physical option. Loves a challenge.
I have two main concerns with Dasilva.
1. He doesn’t offer the attacking threat that we get with Pring. He gets forward and then cuts back onto his right foot, which he never uses and we then lose momentum of the attack.
2. Physical teams target his side of the pitch with target men. We then have to push a centre back across to cover.

He’s a good championship player, but for me Pring is a better fit for the team in our current set-up.
I thought Dasilva was brilliant during his loan season, but hasn’t hit the heights (pardon the pun) since.

On reduced terms. Yes, as competition.
He’s been a disappointing signing for me. I thought he was incredible during his loan period. I know he’s had some nasty injuries but has never fulfilled his potential during his time here. I thought the £2million fee was a bargain at the time. What a shame

Too weak

It's a no from me. Been part of a very leaky defence for too long.

Know this as a fact?
I believe that his size and the fact that he can't use his right foot, lets him down. Not strong enough as a left back and not creative enough as a wing back. I would prefer someone a harder as a defender and creative as an attacker

IMO Get rid............he is not worth his salary...........and often flatters to deceive. It is hard to believe that he is a product of the Chelsea Academy?

We have a history of turning excellent loans into terrible permanent signings, Tomlin being the obvious example. Whilst I wouldn’t put Jay into that category I do not think he has met expectations since signing on a perm.

With him apparently being offered a new contract, all be it a lower wage, do people think offering him a new contract is the right thing to do? For me, I would release and look for a young hungry aggressive lower league left back to offer competition to Pring.
When COD was released NP said that sometimes a player needs to move on for both them and the club, I thought Jay would be in the same boat, it doesn’t seem to be the case.
What are peoples thoughts?

Very simple. No. He can't beat his man, can't cross and is a liability in the air. Much better value available for far less salary

Yep, it's a complete fallacy that he is good going forward.

I feel for the guy on a personal level but football-wise we cannot play him. He's a glaring, obvious weakness in our side that is targeted by the opposition every single time that he plays, just ping high balls towards him and he won't be able to deal with them.

I feel the same. Comes across as a really likable fella but unfortunately he's a liability.

Agree with Clint and Para, the guy is simply too small and not switched on enough, doesn’t know when to stay or to go with his man and isn’t aggressive enough going forwards.

My worry is with our recruitment, who thought “yep that titchy guy with no strength or fight is exactly what we want”?! For the £40 mil+ we’ve spent we’ve honestly had some absolutely shocking recruitment.

Robins and or Viveash clearly wanted him. They tried to sign him in January before we bought him in the summer

It’s almost as if the recruitment team looked at all the other teams that are filled with giants and thought we know better what we need is a small team of weak players and a goalie that can’t save it

Signing him wasn’t to do with the recruitment team

The recruitment team seems to be the thing to go for now we're over the coaches, completely ignoring the fact the worst ones have Robins or Adis finger prints all over them.

While I agree that this one looks as though its down to Robins it's incredible some are giving recruitment team a pass for poor recruitment, the goalkeeping coach a pass for our shite keepers and our performance director a pass for no marked improvement in performances.

It's not a pass its just a fact that needs to be acknowledged whether people like it or not.
If you're looking at players that cost decent money, the 2 most questionable that cost big money are generally agreed to be Kitching and BTA, who were both players pursued by Robins, Binks too also cost a bit and look a bit questionable atm.
Then you look at the players who didn't cost much but are completely hopeless and we're saddled with on decent contracts like Collins and Dasilva who have Adi written all over them.
As uncomfortable as it may be, it is what it is.
If you're looking at the recruitment team you're pointing the finger at them for the overseas players that would have been put in front of Robins and he'd have had no real idea about previously. I'm happy to hear peoples opinions on them but generally they look better than the above in my opinion. I would argue Dovin is looking a bit iffy if he can't get in ahead of Clown A and Clown B but i suppose he still has time.

It is a pass when people are exonerating the recruitment team from responsibility for recruitment!
Robins certainly has to shoulder his share of the blame, no argument from me on that.

You would expect a small guy to be fairly agile and manoeuvrable, probably quick off the mark (to somewhat offset the problems with his size).
He ain't that. People continually leave him flat footed, turn him and get the wrong side of him.
He has no defensive positives.

I don't want to make out i really care about Dean Austin. I don't, and if there's someone obviously better out there we can bring in then great. I just don't think we need to go around sacking everyone left, right and centre atm. Let's see what kind of player we bring in under Lampard.

He's better in tight positions than Bidwell but that's about it.

You need some steel in this league it looks like our recruitment team thought we could pass our way out of the division. Look at the likes of Sheffield United and West brom they have some tough units they are physical and hard to play against that's what you need more than soft passers if you were a team facing coventry at the moment you would be targeting them by getting physical as they will fold under the physicality

Every opposing coach/manager "get at Coventry, take the game to them, their defenders are fucking garbage, they will fold under any amount of prolonged pressure"

and the goals conceded above is pure facts, no1 fears our defenders. Bunch of soft shithouses.

I would rather get Jack Burroughs back to cover the left back spot or Lati, Eccles a sheep dog ANYTHING rather than Da Silva, as I have said before if the management/coaching team cannot see how many times the opposition score from the left well they all need to fuck off and work for Asda or something else.
Da Silva is a massive liability MASSIVE !

JDS is a very good footballer but is exposed by his height. Looked great against small wingers until the opposition bring on a tall right sided player. JDS has been culpable for a lot of our goals conceded this year but so has MVE and every other goalkeeper, defender and midfielder including Jake Bidwell.
JDS cost nothing. There are players in the team who cost way more and are equally poor.
