Just read his statement, clearly a very troubled and unstable individual, betting against his own team, although only when he wasn't involved he states.
I'm sure a lot of people can relate to a lot of what he has said in his statement.
Would love to see him turn this into a positive and help offer support for younger players in a similar position to himself, he obviously feels hard done by and feels like hes been made an example of. Just as likely that we will slip down the Gazza route and let his demons take over, from what I understand and read of his personality.

He knew the rules on betting either don't do it or don't get caught, he will be on talksport as a full time presenter now.

Can't stand the bloke but it does seem harsh and he's got a point with a couple of things he says in his statement:
I think if the FA is truly serious about tackling the culture of gambling in football, it needs to look at its own dependence on the gambling companies, their role in football and in sports broadcasting, rather than just blaming the players who place a bet.
But surely they need to accept there is a huge clash between their rules and the culture that surrounds the modern game, where anyone who watches follows football on TV or in the stadia is bombarded by marketing, advertising and sponsorship by betting companies, and where much of the coverage now, on Sky for example, is intertwined with the broadcasters’ own gambling interests.
That all means this is not an easy environment in which to try to stop gambling, or even to encourage people within the sport that betting is wrong. It is like asking a recovering alcoholic to spend all his time in a pub or a brewery. If the FA is serious about tackling gambling I would urge it to reconsider its own dependence on the gambling industry. I say that knowing that every time I pull on my team’s shirt, I am advertising a betting company.

how do you work that out? he said never when he played in the game and sure no one else in the team knew. very bizarre comment.
Ignore him, he's just saying outlandish things to get a reaction again.

Yip, but only backed the team he was playing in to win or bet on first goalscorers (actually bet £3 on himself whilst at Man City). Whilst he would obviously have had an influence on the game, it's not the same as betting on his team to lose whilst he was in the side and he'd hacked someone down for a pen. I think his statement clears that up pretty succinctly and the FA supported that.
Personally think the ban is too long.

I used to defend the guy from a lot of the flack that fans have given him over the years as I just thought he was a bit misunderstood. However at some point in everyones lives you just have to stop being a bit of a twat.

The guy's obviously a dick and I'm not going to defend him. But the list of bets he laid (which I got from Guardian article here: Joey Barton banned for 18 months by FA and says it effectively ends his career) is just a bit sad in the end. 18 month ban for that is a joke.

It's a fair point, but it's always been the thing that the FA (and other sporting bodies) have taken major exception too. It's not as though he wouldn't be aware of it. I can understand the gambling addiction, but there are plenty of other things to punt on besides football and your own team! I must confess that my sympathy is limited, but that's probably coloured by the fact that I think he's a thuggish twat.
