Views on his time at City?

Personally, think he was a good player who got a hard time off the fans. One thing I think he lacked was a yard of pace, probably a result of that serious knee injury. His crossing was excellent.

He was a decent player who could be frustrating, like most wingers. You're right about the quality of his crossing.
I can think of a few wingers who we've given a hard time to over the years.

I think he did play for England while at Palace, but pretty sure he also got called up when playing for us, think he had to withdraw through injury?

Liked to see his babe in the team sheet.
Sometimes a bit hit and miss but there was a chance of excitement.
Like Jones at this level
Ryan Kent last year.
Jordan Henderson when we had him on loan
Ritchie Partridge


The difference is Solako did it at the highest level and did it far more consistently Steve Froggat was another one.

Good signing IMO

I used to sit in the M&B stand nearer the Kop end when he played, he always got lots of decent crosses in & there never seemed to be anyone in our team attacking them, so most of them sailed past or got easily cleared. :facepalm:

He was a good player, occasionally frustrating but fairly good crossed of the ball. He was also very approachable and a very pleasant guy.

The first proper winger we had since David Smith. I liked him, thought he was one of those signings that showed we were finally starting to go places. A statement of intent like the Bowyer and Rufus signings from Charlton would have been. (I was innocent of all the financial issues back then!)

He started off really well when he joined and was called up by England for definitely 1 squad, maybe 2. Was a consistent player for a couple of years. At the end he appeared to have lost his confidence and told Strachan he wasn't fit to play. I remember a 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday when he had 3 or 4 good chances to score but never looked like he was going to. I think Strachan was partly to blame, he came back for Charlton in the FA Cup in 99/00 and played really well & looked like he had a point to prove when they beat us 3-2 at HR

He did. Me and my mate went to see him play. Think it might have been the game where Barnes got boo'd by England fans. Personally. I thought he was ok as a winger due to his lack of real pace but he could put in a half decent cross.
Just checked and he was in the squad whilst with us but never came on.

Good player who I think unfortunately was on the decline by the time he got to us (due to injuries). Still put in some decent performances for us though. Wasn't he quoted in that Staying Up (was that what it was called?!) book as saying, 'Players hate the fans'? Obviously I have stripped away any kind of context there!

Very frustrating player... he had the ability but lazy is my memories of him i even rang cwr and slated him after 1 match... very wasted talent such a shame

Do remember him splashing the cash in Mr G's nightclub, maybe one of the many reasons he went bankrupt?

Another player I remember well and loved watching play, was Stephen Warnock. We got him on loan from Liverpool for a while and I remember thinking at the time that I wish we could sign him permanently! Alas, it was never to be. He was even voted as our Player of the year. Not bad for a loanee!

Salako was a waste of money - got 2 seasons out of him, costs us £1m + and then was released for free, good with the ball but awful without it, took loads of free kicks in good positions most would land gently in the goalkeeper's arms. Froggart was a far more effective player, highlights will show his great crosses and odd goal but won't show his half-hearted tackles

Oooh dunno. Don't think Steve Harkness would agree he was half hearted in the tackle....

Think some fans are a bit unforgiving if a player has a lad about town reputation coupled with a few indifferent games.

Thought he was about value for money all told. When he was at Palace and playing at HR he always seemed to have a great game. Remember one in particular circa 95. Palace won 4-1 and he and Chris Armstrong ran riot.

From the Staying Up book he really didn't like Strachan did he.

Salako was a good player who we paid too much for. Frogatt on the other hand was England material. If he hadn't suffered the way he did with injuries he could have had a great career, although he'd probably have gone to one of the big clubs at the time.

He was decent for where we were at that time, but Palace knew he was only going to go down in value due to injuries. He had gone to Newcastle but he failed the medical and they went for Ginola instead I believe, he came to Cov on his way back down south and signed.

Seem to remember a game at Highfield Road when he came on as a substitute, but was later substituted himself, clearly Strachan wasn't pleased was his commitment. The only time I remember a sub being substituted, it was met with a mixture of cheers and boos.
