Coventry City v Charlton Athletic: How to join in today's protest

Supporters from both clubs came together back in October when pigs were thrown onto the pitch

Coventry City protest group Jimmy Hill Way have announced plans for another joint demonstration with Charlton Athletic fans at their upcoming League One clash.

Supporters from both clubs came together back in October 2016 to protest against their respective owners - London hedge fund Sisu and Belgian businessman Roland Duchatelet.

A march led by both sets of fans to the Valley ahead of the game was followed by thousands of pink plastic pigs being thrown on to the pitch, forcing the game to be halted and gaining widespread national media coverage.

The Addicks travel to the Ricoh Arena on Good Friday, and plans for ‘The Sequel’ include a 2pm march from the Cherry Tree Club along Bedlam Lane and the footpath on Phoenix Way to the jimmy Hill statue outside the Ricoh Arena.

A statement from the Jimmy Hill Way group said: “Back in October 2016, fans from the Charlton Supporters Group CARD (Coalition Against Roland Duchatelet) were joined by travelling Sky Blues supporters in a combined Protest against the Owners and Directors of both clubs.

“An initial march to the Valley with placards, banners and raucous chanting was followed by the now-legendary Flying Pigs incident in the ground. This achieved both national and international coverage on TV, Radio and in the press. The problems caused at Coventry City by our owners, Sisu Capital - led by Joy Seppala - and Club Chairman, Tim Fisher are well-known to CCFC supporters.

“These problems have only got worse during the course of this season, to the point that we now face inevitable relegation to League 2. Attendances have been dwindling during this dreadful campaign and are set to get worse, with indications that perhaps only 1 in 5 season ticket holders will be renewing this summer.

“The crisis with the Academy tenancy at Allard Way looms large; we have no ground and only one season left at the Ricoh; Ryton Training Ground is under threat for housing development; despite a magnificent win in the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley, a day that we will all treasure, the playing squad has not been up to the more important task of competing in League 1."

More than 20,000 people have signed the Telegraph’s petition for owners Sisu to sell up and go, with Charlton fans’ group CARD also calling for the Addicks’ owner to put them up for sale.

The Jimmy Hill Way group statement added: “Fans are invited to bring banners, musical instruments and other devices that add to the atmosphere, though people should be aware that Arena Security may restrict items being taken into the ground.

“Further instructions on continuing the protest during the match will be issued on the March. As always, we request that any protest activities are lawful and responsible. Please pay particular heed to the safety of players and match officials, other employees at the ground and fellow supporters.

“Organisers from CARD and the Jimmy Hill Way intend that this event should be fun, demonstrating a solidarity of purpose and re-emphasising the serious anxieties that supporters share about the future of both Coventry City and Charlton Athletic.

“Please come and join us.”

Was not going to bother today as thought we would be relegated by end of the day, however I will definitely be on the March and just wish other supporters would stand together to protest against poor owners.

My utmost respect goes to the Charlton faithful, I'll raise a glass to you all later when I'm have a few vat-loads. :)

Also, in recent weeks we've seen a polar opposite in rival fan's mentalities: the decency and affability of Charlton, and the downright gobshite wankers of Sheff Utd.

Ultimate irony that we were relegated on the day we played Charlton. At least it was less painful than being relegated by Sheff U. last week

Personally, since the inevitable drop into L2, I was hoping it was Charlton who relegated us and not Sheff Utd. I'm glad that satisfaction wasn't granted to those arrogant bastards.
