But he’s lying

you're always going on about how Starmer needs to do things that will be popular with the British public. At this moment in time it's popular to support THE QUEEN, which he's doing.

Had he come out saying 'abolish the monarchy' you'd be saying how he was tone deaf and out of touch with what the public wants.

And before we get into a debate about principles and believing in something, you constantly excuse the man who is probably the least principled and follows populist opinion the most in the country.

Bit like Brezhnev was elected by the USSR then?
What about Brown, May and Johnson when they took over? Elected by the parties but not by the people. Surely if there is a leadership change there should be a GE?

O are you going to argue that we vote for a party so therefore whoever they choose still counts. Which would therefore make the EU leadership perfectly acceptable as well.

So does Sir sneer like the queen or not?

The biggest liar in parliament this century managed 3 terms

you clearly prefer a straight talker - never had you down as a Thatcherite

It’s more a case of SBT ahead of the curve. The popularity of the monarchy has been falling for years. Traditionally it sees an up turn in jubilee years. Not happened this year. The trend remains on a downward curve. It’s still above 50 % in favour but amongst younger adults the monarchy is about as popular as a fart at a funeral. Royalists are a dying breed and I can’t see the behaviour of Andrew and the Queen bailing him out garnering any favour with the more awake generations to reverse that. The monarchy isn’t going to survive another 70 years without a major reform.
I think we need to look at it as the popularity of the queen as opposed to popularity of the monarchy.

I'm no royalist but in recent years I've looked more sympathetically on the queen, probably because of her age. Even her paying Andrew's settlement hasn't really made me think other than let the old girl live out her days in the role, and I'd be quite pleased (but probably surprised now) for her to make it to 100 and have a 75 year Jubilee.

But once she has gone I think that support will erode again after a coronation. I don't think Charles will have that same sympathy. He's also quite opinionated which may not be to everyone's liking (even though I do like his thinking on green issues it's plainly obvious his life of privilege means he has no idea about how normal people live).

So I could definitely see him possibly being the last.

But then you've just got to look at other countries to see the dangers of elected Heads of State. Putin, Trump, Bolsonaro. Seems to essentially be giving a huge amount of power to individuals who basically have a bit of charisma. Not really what I'm looking for in a HoS. It's quite something when things like Bake Off are put through sterner tests of their ability to do the job than someone running a country.

The other thing I'd add, is that I'm not going to let the right claim patriotism as their own.

I love my country too, the difference between me and them is that I want it to work for everyone in it. At the moment the ones that need the most get the least, and vice versa.
Yep. They need to learn there's a difference between patriotism and nationalism.

Just seen the news reports on the scum protesters. Fkn weird. Lots of things I don't like, but let people who do enjoy them. Why would you spend your money travelling and risk being arrested making a tool of yourself just to disrupt something you don't like? People can be horrifically stupid at times.

Serious question. How does pro monarchy sit with being a Christian?

The reason I ask is because the royal family tree gives them Devine rights and basically says they’re direct descendants of Adam and Eve. Unless you’re a Christian surely this this makes it difficult to be pro monarchy. Basically the royal family is only the royal family because they were chosen by god. When you actually start reading into the history of the royal family it gets very Kim Jong-Un like.
No different being a xian or not I don’t think

TBF Pete although I appreciate the reply I wasn’t really aiming my question to you. Specifically because I’ve seen you receive scorn for being a Christian and expressing that view. Pretty sure that’s been by some of the same people who worship a monarchy who are only monarchy because of a historical Devine right that assumes that they’re directly descended from god.

There’s a contradiction. Being a royalist is tantamount to being Christian fundamentalists in many ways yet many (not just on here) don’t understand that.

Nah. Out of place idealistic hippie I will grant you though.

You are about as much a hippie as Richard Branson

You are white middle class and privileged as it gets

You and your wife live in leafy leamington and your collective earnings are more than most on here

The Owen Jones faux outrage is dull. Even he can laugh at his own nonsense sometimes - you should try it
