Kelly Staying? (1 Viewer)

In terms of championship wages it won't be absurd will it ?
We do need squad depth as this season has definitely proved .. having 4 or 5 midfielders is absolutely normal surely ?

I don't know, @Skybluebeliever says he is one of the highest paid players at the club.

Totally agree with you on depth & he does offer some great attributes but surely it's not unreasonable to expect more for the outlay?
Even if fully fit Hamer, Sheaf & Allen are all clearly better than him & Eccles has shown signs he can step up too if he can overcome his own injury problems.

So the question is, does having our 5th best midfielder, making 8 starts all season, warrant being one of our highest earners?

Eccles looks like a player so i think he will keep Kelly on the bench next season

He's reportedly on 7-10k a week depending who you believe. With the average Championship wage at 25k+ can we replace a solid defensive midfielder, influential voice and club captain for the same money? I don't see too many candidates with that package (pun intended) out there.

I had generally been of the opinion of let him go because his use of the ball isn't good enough at this level but thought he did well today and in his recent sub appearances.

He's clearly not good enough to be a regular starter at this level, and MR agrees, but if he's cheap squad filler and makes 10-15 appearances as cover, half of them off the bench, then he's probably worth keeping around

Kells will leave as he wants to play
We should thank him for his great contribution

We're in a tough situation here. Lots of players that deserve us to do right by them thanks to their contribution in the past, but with the fixture congestion next season, we could really do with them staying.

Especially with out budget constraints, getting someone in to replace Kelly, on the wages he will have been on (even as one of our higher earners) will be tough. Anyone coming in, will see us as a mid-table championship team, and will want paying as one.

I was surprised to hear Kells was leaving as I thought he had another year
No doubt we'll hear more in due course

25k pw equates to £1.3m per annum. find it hard to believe that is true to be honest. that puts the average 25 player squad at a cost of £32.5m thats without any other costs a club necessarily has to pay in salaries eg manager, trainers, backroom staff, directors etc

I think the averages are distorted by the teams bouncing between Championship and Premier League

What do you reckon is the average weekly wage for the top players in the championship, talking new contracts I don’t think it will be much more than £10k still I nice wage over the life time of a three year deal

What? We have players on over 10k, why would the top players earn less? 😂

Yes you are probably correct. Would be interesting to see what the average is of teams not receiving parachute payments. Would probably give a fairer figure.

Meant to be ? But do you know, of course you don’t it’s just talk rumour call it what you want picked up on here by similar no marks who don’t know.

Okay forgetting that for a minute, you believe “top” Championship players like Mitrovic and Solanke are on not much more than 10k a week?

I believe SBB who is very ITK said Waghorn and others are on 10k or upwards. You really think top championship players are on 10k? Strange

Well I have read on a number of sites that NEW contracts will be substantially lower than they have been in the past, yes there are old contracts paying Monopoly money some are or were paying more than a pound for every £1 they received.

Mitrovic signed a new Fulham contract at the start of the season believed to be close to 80k pw. If what you’re saying is correct, lots of these top players will be interested in coming here on more money?

What top players, you keep quoting things but no substance.

Kelly has been a fantastic signing and has been a big part of why the club to be where it is today. Right man at the right time, who was brought in to play a role as leader on and off the field. His work ethic and attitude helped build a group of players that drove them to believe in themselves and each other to succeed as a team.

He should be very proud of his time with us. To be the club captain during of one of the best periods for fans in the clubs history, says a lot about him. Even when injured he will of played his part in player meetings and work around the club. Been a very good leader, MR picked him perfectly to suit what we needed at the time. He did the same with Doyle who I think brought the same influence to the dressing room.

But we have moved on and MR needs to pick the right type of players again. He wants to push on compete higher and will do it by making decisions without sentiment. He will be aggressive and go after exactly what he needs. Losing players is part of the process, Kelly is going to be just that and seen as a casualty of natural progession.

Best of luck to him, if he goes fans will not have anything but gratitude for the things he brought to the club while here.

If Kelly goes, and with Fadz having just a year extension I wonder who's next in line as captain?
