Pardon my ignorance, but how do you know he's the highest paid player at the club? Are players' salaries listed somewhere?

I was told a figure when he signed from a usually reliable source, to be fair it could be untrue so I shouldn't state it as fact but I'm fairly confident. I was also told he had a relegation clause cutting his contract significantly, which is one of the reasons he wanted out, but it still has him higher than any other i've heard.

Had a great game against Barnet but then anonymous against Luton. Prefer him as an impact sub against tired defenders. He won't be here next season as he's, by a fair margin, the highest paid player at the club and we could use the money better elsewhere. Shipley has had a great breakthrough season and we should be putting the time into his development.
Are you the club's accountant or just clairvoyant?

Reid will be begging Robins to give him a new contract if we get promoted to league one

What salary Reid's on atm is irrelevant. What'sd relevant is what salary he's prepared to accept next season.

Will be dependant what league we are in as well what the salary scale is.
Well it's also dependent on demand for him.

I remember reading an article on... Peter Beardsley(?) that said when he went down the leagues teams didn't even try and offer him a contract as they assumed he'd still want top flight wages. But by this point he just wanted to play, so would have accepted a living wage, basically, just to keep going.

Now Reid's clearly not that level, or personality, but what he can earn will depend on what the demand for his services is. I'd assume that demand would be rather less than at the time of his last contract.

Although he's put in some solid performances since Robins has brought him back into the mix I think it's best for both parties he moves on unless he takes a serious pay cut.
