Lack of "football arrogance" (2 Viewers)

Been chewing on this for a while so keen to see if anyone else sees this.

But I do think a huge part of the players profile Mark would sign off on / request / expect, were basically "nice guys". He clearly cared a lot about making sure there were no egos and that everyone could get along. When he was forced to accept players like Todd Kane who didn't fit that mould they were quickly exiled.

I'm actually all for the sentiment, but I do think it means we have acquired more mentally fragile players on the whole. Take Haji Wright and MVE as examples. If they carried themselves in the way that matches their clear talent, they'd absolutely destroy thus league. But they are nice guys, get pushed around a lot and it affects their confidence as a result.

Now look at Bassette - that was a firesale by Caen because he wanted out, so think DA / DK knew they had an opportunity to get a clear mega talent at a good price. However he's got a bit of that "football arrogance" that most of our squad lacks. He knows he is hot shit and brings that to the pitch. Absolutely oozing with confidence at 19, even despite the fact he can't head the ball for toffee 😅

When I think about some of the best players in this league right now (Sainz at Norwich an example), they are arrogant as shit. That mindset - total and utter wild self belief and confidence - brings with it a steadfastness and a fight that I just don't see in our players.

So all that is to say, I think if we want to get out of this league we have to accept that nice guys with talent isn't it. Or at least is only part of it anyway. We either need to recruit differently, or hope that our coaches and performance director can cultivate that mindset.

Probably won't be a popular opinion, and will come back to bite me on the arse in a few years like Vic, but I don't think he is 'shit hot'. He's got a decent amount of potential but not enough to warrant the arrogance he has IMO.I'd say there's players with more potential than him that don't go around acting like an arse on the pitch. And for someone that goes around barging into players he falls over way, way too easily.

Get what you’re saying, but that type of self belief- which is so huge that it comes across as arrogance- is a huge weapon in the arsenal of someone like Vik. Ronaldo had that type of attitude too, utterly single-minded to the point where it was a bit nauseating & turned people against him- but you couldn’t argue with where it took him. Looks like Vik is heading that way, but he needs quite a few more years like the last two under his belt before he goes near that bracket.

If it was that valuable Norm wouldn't have just 1 goal to his name and mediocre stats at best

I’d say it’s pretty unarguable that self belief & single-mindedness is a very big asset to a striker.

Bassette is 20 and we don’t really know what level of ability he has yet, without the required ability you can be as arrogant as you like, it won’t matter. But if you have that talent then a bit of arrogance can take you a long way, much further than someone with the same ability who is a ‘nice guy’.

Don't agree at all
Robins was here for 7 years, improved many signings and in particular strikers. If he was getting it that wrong he wouldn't have had the success he's had.

Our recruitment and particularly the mentality of our recruitment was hailed across the divisions as an example to others until about two years ago.

I’d say it’s lack of aggression rather than arrogance. I know it’s a non contact sport in essence now but we don’t have any aggression. From the back you’d say Binks, mve, Dasilva, Eccles, Sheaf, Wright, Simms, mason-Clark, Saka are all very laid back players. It’s too many.

Did we really buy Bassette cause Caen was having a fire sale? I wonder what he was really worth if we in fact bought him on the cheap. I thought it was quite a big figure for buying someone for that price who was 19 y/o
